CLASSIC BREAD DRESSING

Classic Bread Dressing image

This is the classic bread dressing I make every year for Thanksgiving. I think it's from a Betty Crocker cookbook. Just posting it here to keep track of it.

Provided by DragonIady

Categories     Thanksgiving

Time 1h

Yield 1 9x13 pan, 8 serving(s)

Number Of Ingredients 8

3/4 cup margarine or 3/4 cup butter
2 large celery ribs, chopped
3/4 cup onion, finely chopped
9 cups soft bread cubes (15 pieces, I like to use a bread that's nutty or grainy)
1 1/2 teaspoons fresh thyme, chopped or 1/2 teaspoon dried thyme leaves
1 teaspoon salt
1/2 teaspoon ground sage
1/4 teaspoon pepper

Steps:

  • Make bread cubes ahead of time and set out on counter so they can get a little "stale.".
  • Melt margarine in dutch oven over medium-high heat.
  • Cook celery and onion in margarine, stirring occasionally, until tender; remove from heat.
  • Toss celery mixture and remaining ingredients.
  • Pour dressing into a greased casserole. Cover with lid or aluminum foil and refrigerate until about 30 minutes before poultry is done.
  • Bake uncovered in the same oven with the poultry about 45 minutes or until hot. Spoon poultry drippings over stuffing as it cooks.
  • Continue to bake the dressing while you let the poultry stand 15 minutes before carving.

Tips:

  • Select suitable bread: Choose a hearty bread that can hold its shape when soaked in the dressing liquid. Stale or day-old bread is ideal, as it absorbs the liquid better and prevents the dressing from becoming soggy.
  • Use a variety of bread: Combine different types of bread, such as white, wheat, and sourdough, to add depth and flavor to the dressing.
  • Toast the bread cubes: Toasting the bread cubes before adding them to the dressing enhances their flavor and gives them a crispy texture.
  • Butter or oil: Add a little butter or oil to the pan when toasting the bread cubes. This helps them brown evenly and prevents them from sticking.
  • Season the dressing: Use a combination of herbs, spices, and seasonings to flavor the dressing. Common additions include sage, thyme, rosemary, salt, and pepper.
  • Use flavorful liquids: Stock, broth, or even wine can be used to add flavor to the dressing. Choose a liquid that complements the other ingredients in the dressing.
  • Bind the dressing: Use eggs or a combination of eggs and milk to bind the dressing together. This helps keep the dressing moist and prevents it from becoming dry.
  • Adjust the consistency: The consistency of the dressing should be thick enough to coat the bread cubes but not too thick that it becomes stodgy. Add more liquid or bread cubes as needed to achieve the desired consistency.
  • Bake or stuff: Bread dressing can be baked in a casserole dish or stuffed inside a turkey or chicken. Baking time will vary depending on the method used.

Conclusion:

Two bread dressing is a versatile and flavorful dish that can be enjoyed as a side dish or a main course. With its simple ingredients and easy-to-follow instructions, this recipe is a great choice for home cooks of all skill levels. Whether you are looking for a classic Thanksgiving dressing or a new twist on an old favorite, this two bread dressing recipe is sure to impress. So next time you are in the kitchen, give it a try and experience the deliciousness of this traditional dish.
