GRILLED TRIPLE-DECKER HOT DOG SANDWICH

Grilled Triple-Decker Hot Dog Sandwich image

Provided by Jeff Mauro, host of Sandwich King

Time 30m

Yield 6 servings

Number Of Ingredients 11

6 jumbo hot dogs, butterflied
Unsalted butter, melted, for brushing
6 hoagie rolls (preferably poppy seed), halved lengthwise
Nonstick cooking spray
1/3 pound yellow Cheddar, sliced
1/3 pound provolone, sliced
1/3 pound genoa salami, thinly sliced
1/4 cup yellow mustard
1/2 head iceberg lettuce, thinly sliced
2 beefsteak tomatoes, sliced 1/4-inch-thick
Celery salt, for serving

Steps:

  • Heat grill to 450 degrees F.
  • Grill the hot dogs until nice and charred on both sides, 3 to 4 minutes per side. Butter the cut sides of the hoagie roll halves and grill, cut side-down, until charred, 1 to 2 minutes.
  • Using a skewer or the tip of a small paring knife, poke about 10 holes in the bottom of a TK pan. Spray the entire pan with nonstick cooking spray (this is an important step). Now, layer in this order: one-third each of the charred hot dogs, Cheddar, provolone and salami. Repeat the layers 2 more times, making sure to finish with a layer of salami. Make sure that every layer is a snug fit, like you would a lasagna.
  • Put the pan on the grill and close the lid. Grill until the cheese has melted, 8 to 10 minutes. Remove from the grill and let rest for about 5 minutes. Run a paring knife around the edge of the pan to loosen the loaf. Turn the pan out onto a cutting board, unveiling the hot dog loaf. Slice the loaf crosswise into 6 pieces, just as you would a meatloaf. To build your sandwich: start with your hot dog loaf on the bottom bun, then top with mustard, lettuce, tomato and a sprinkling of celery salt. Finish with the top bun.

8 slices sourdough bread
4 slices cheddar cheese (about 3 ounces)
4 slices Swiss cheese (about 3 ounces)
4 slices American cheese (about 3 ounces)

Steps:

  • Spread the butter on one side of each bread slice. Heat a large skillet over medium heat. Put 2 bread slices in the skillet, buttered-side down. Layer a slice each of cheddar, Swiss and American cheese on each piece of bread, then cover with another bread slice, buttered-side up.
  • Cook, pressing the sandwiches occasionally with a spatula, until the cheese melts and the bread is golden, 3 to 4 minutes per side. Repeat to make 2 more sandwiches. Slice each sandwich diagonally in half, then return to the hot pan, cut-side down, to create a crust on the cheese.

Time 25m

Yield 2 sandwiches, 4-6 serving(s)

Number Of Ingredients 7

butter or margarine
6 thick slices bread (whole wheat stands up to the heft of this big sandwich)
1 large tomatoes, sliced crosswise into thin (1/4-inch)
4 slices sharp cheddar cheese
4 slices provolone cheese
6 -8 slices of crisp cooked bacon
4 slices American cheese

Steps:

  • Heat a large skillet over medium heat. Butter two pieces of bread on one side, and place next to each other in the skillet. These are the foundation slices for two sandwiches. Place a slice of cheddar on each piece of bread in the skillet, and arrange tomato slices in a single layer on each. Butter two more slices of bread, and place them butter side up over the tomato slices. When bottom of each sandwich is golden brown, use a spatula to carefully turn each sandwich. Now place a slice of provolone on top of each sandwich, and 1-2 slices of bacon. Top with the final slice of provolone. Butter two additional slices of bread and place them, butter side up, on top of each sandwich. Again, when the bottom of each sandwich is golden brown, use a spatula to carefully turn each sandwich. You may need your fingers to keep the sandwich intact while turning. Now place a slice of swiss on each sandwich, then a layer of bacon, then the final layer of swiss. Butter the final two slices of bread and place them, butter side up, on top of each sandwich. When the bottom is golden brown, use a spatula to carefully turn each sandwich. You will almost certainly need to use your fingers to keep the sandwich intact while turning. Cook until golden brown. Remove sandwiches to a cutting board, and cut on the diagonal to create thick, layered triangle slices, and serve. Variation: Sprinkle Italian Seasoning on the butter sides before frying, for added flavor and great aroma. Dill pickles and tomato soup are great alongside this beauty.

TRIPLE DECKER GRILLED CHEESE SANDWICH

Triple Decker Grilled Cheese Sandwich image

Did you ever eat a grilled cheese sandwich and wish you had made a little more? This solves that problem...using three slices of bread. I also like to add cooked bacon slices and thin sliced tomato to this.

Provided by Marie

Categories     Lunch/Snacks

Time 10m

Yield 1 serving(s)

Number Of Ingredients 3

3 slices bread
3 slices American cheese (or your choice)
1 tablespoon soft butter

Steps:

  • Place 1 1/2 cheese slices on one bread slice, top with second bread slice and remaining cheese slices, then top with third bread slice.
  • Spread outside of sandwich slices with butter and cook in a skillet on medium heat until browned on both sides.

Tips:

  • When choosing your bread, opt for a sturdy variety that can hold up to the fillings and won't get soggy. Some good options include sourdough, French bread, or a hearty whole-grain bread.
  • Be generous with the butter. Buttering the bread will help to create a golden brown crust and prevent the bread from sticking to the pan.
  • Don't be afraid to experiment with different cheeses. The classic combination of cheddar and mozzarella is always a winner, but you can also try other cheeses like Gruyère, Gouda, or Havarti.
  • Add other fillings to your sandwich to create a unique flavor profile. Some popular options include bacon, ham, avocado, tomato, and spinach.
  • Cook the sandwich over medium heat so that the cheese has time to melt and the bread has time to toast.
  • Serve the sandwich immediately with your favorite sides, such as tomato soup, chips, or a salad.

Conclusion:

The triple-decker grilled cheese sandwich is a classic comfort food that is sure to please everyone at the table. With its crispy bread, melted cheese, and endless possibilities for fillings, this sandwich is a versatile and delicious meal that can be enjoyed for breakfast, lunch, or dinner. So next time you're looking for a quick and easy meal that is sure to satisfy, give the triple-decker grilled cheese sandwich a try.
