Tips for Making Perfect Hot Cross Buns:

  • Use fresh, high-quality ingredients: Fresh yeast, eggs, and milk will produce the best results.
  • Make sure your yeast is active: If your yeast is old or inactive, your buns won't rise properly. To test your yeast, dissolve it in a little warm water with a pinch of sugar. If it starts to bubble within 10 minutes, it's active and ready to use.
  • Knead the dough properly: Kneading the dough develops the gluten and helps the buns rise. Knead the dough for at least 10 minutes, or until it is smooth and elastic.
  • Let the dough rise in a warm place: The dough needs to rise in a warm place in order to double in size. A good place to let the dough rise is in a turned-off oven with a bowl of hot water placed inside.
  • Shape the buns properly: Once the dough has risen, divide it into 12 equal pieces. Roll each piece into a ball and then flatten it into a disk. Place a cross on top of each bun using a sharp knife.
  • Bake the buns in a hot oven: The buns should be baked in a hot oven (400°F) for 15-20 minutes, or until they are golden brown.
  • Brush the buns with a glaze: Once the buns are baked, brush them with a glaze made from sugar and water. This will give the buns a shiny glaze.
