Tips:

  • Activate the yeast properly: In lukewarm water (110-115°F) with a pinch of sugar, activate the yeast. This activates the yeast and ensures the bread rises properly.
  • Measure ingredients accurately: Use a kitchen scale to accurately measure ingredients, particularly flour and liquids. Proper measurements ensure the bread has the right texture and consistency.
  • Knead the dough until smooth and elastic: Kneading develops the gluten in the flour, giving the bread its structure and elasticity. Knead for at least 5-7 minutes until the dough is smooth and springs back when poked.
  • Let the dough rise in a warm place: Place the dough in a greased bowl, cover it with plastic wrap or a damp cloth, and let it rise in a warm place (75-80°F) until doubled in size. This allows the yeast to work and produce gases that cause the bread to rise.
  • Shape the dough gently: After the dough has risen, gently shape it into your desired shape without overworking it. Overworking the dough can result in a dense, chewy bread.
  • Score the bread before baking: Scoring the top of the bread with a sharp knife or lame allows the bread to expand properly during baking and gives it a nice crust.
  • Bake the bread in a preheated oven: Preheat the oven to the desired temperature before putting the bread in. This ensures the bread bakes evenly and prevents it from becoming dense.
  • Let the bread cool before slicing: After baking, let the bread cool completely before slicing. This allows the bread to set and prevents it from crumbling.
