BEST BROCCOLI SALAD

Best Broccoli Salad image

I made this salad for an end of school year pot luck. The following year I was asked if I would bring it again. People remember this salad from year to year. It can be made the day before and chilled - which is very helpful. It uses a full pound of bacon. The cook time is actually "chill time" in the refrigerator.

Time 1h15m

Yield 8-10 serving(s)

Number Of Ingredients 8

1 bunch broccoli (tops only, broken into small pieces)
1/2 cup raisins
1 cup sunflower seeds
1 small onion, chopped (or less)
1 lb bacon, fried crisp and crumbled
1 cup mayonnaise
1/2 cup sugar
2 tablespoons apple cider vinegar

Steps:

  • Combine all the salad ingredients, tossing well to mix.
  • Mix the dressing ingredients together then toss with the salad mix.
  • Let stand at least 1 hour in the refrigerator (can be made the day before).

Tips:

  • Choose the right broccoli: Look for broccoli with tightly closed florets and a deep green color. Avoid broccoli with yellowing or wilted florets.
  • Cut the broccoli into bite-sized pieces: This will help the broccoli to cook evenly and absorb the flavors of the dressing.
  • Blanch the broccoli: Blanching the broccoli helps to preserve its color and nutrients. To blanch the broccoli, bring a large pot of salted water to a boil. Add the broccoli and cook for 2-3 minutes, or until the broccoli is tender-crisp. Immediately transfer the broccoli to a bowl of ice water to stop the cooking process.
  • Make the dressing: The dressing for broccoli salad typically consists of mayonnaise, vinegar, sugar, and spices. You can also add other ingredients to the dressing, such as bacon, cheese, or nuts.
  • Combine the broccoli and dressing: In a large bowl, combine the blanched broccoli and the dressing. Toss to coat the broccoli evenly.
  • Chill the salad: Broccoli salad is best served chilled. Cover the bowl and refrigerate the salad for at least 1 hour before serving.

Conclusion:

Broccoli salad is a delicious and healthy side dish that is perfect for any occasion. With its fresh, crunchy broccoli, creamy dressing, and variety of optional add-ins, broccoli salad is sure to please everyone at your table.
