Time 20m

Yield 6 serving(s)

Number Of Ingredients 7

1/4 cup lemon juice
2 tablespoons sugar
2 tablespoons chopped fresh cilantro
2 tablespoons fish sauce or 2 tablespoons soy sauce
2 garlic cloves, minced
1/4 teaspoon hot pepper flakes
2 lbs mussels, scrubbed and beards removed

Steps:

  • Whisk together all but the mussels.
  • Arrange mussels on a barbecue, close lid and cook 5 minutes or until mussels open. Transfer to a platter.
  • Drizzle with the sauce.

Tips:

  • To ensure the freshest mussels, purchase them live and unopened. Discard any mussels with broken or cracked shells.
  • Clean the mussels thoroughly by scrubbing them with a brush to remove any dirt or debris. Remove the beards by pulling them out with your fingers or a pair of pliers.
  • Use a large pot or steamer basket to cook the mussels. This will allow them to steam evenly and prevent overcrowding.
  • Add aromatic ingredients such as lemongrass, ginger, and garlic to the steaming liquid to infuse the mussels with flavor.
  • Steam the mussels for 5-7 minutes, or until they open. Overcooking can make them tough and rubbery.
  • Serve the mussels immediately with dipping sauces such as a spicy seafood sauce or a garlic butter sauce.

Conclusion:

Thai steamed mussels are a delicious and easy-to-make appetizer or main course. With a few simple ingredients and a little bit of time, you can create a dish that is both flavorful and healthy. So next time you're looking for a seafood dish that is sure to impress, give this recipe a try.
