TAVERNS

Taverns image

Taverns are similar to sloppy joes, just not as "tomato-y;" I have made these for many church and work pot-lucks by increasing the quantities. For Zaar I cut the recipe down to 4 servings. I have had this recipe for many years and really don't have a clue where I first came across it. Works great in the Crock Pot.

Time 45m

Yield 4-6 serving(s)

Number Of Ingredients 9

1 lb ground beef
3/4 cup ketchup
3/4 cup water
1 medium onion, finely chopped
1 teaspoon prepared mustard
1 teaspoon chili powder
2 tablespoons brown sugar
1/8 cup vinegar, slightly less than
salt and pepper

Steps:

  • In a medium skillet, brown ground beef until no longer pink, drain fat.
  • Over medium heat add additional ingredients to ground beef.
  • Simmer a minimum of 30 minutes, stirring occasionally.
  • Serve on buns.

Tips:

  • Choose the right ingredients: Use fresh, high-quality ingredients for the best flavor. Look for ripe tomatoes, sweet onions, and flavorful spices.
  • Don't be afraid to experiment: There are many different ways to make barbecue sauce, so feel free to adjust the ingredients and proportions to suit your taste. You can add more or less sugar, spice, or vinegar, or even try different types of tomatoes or onions.
  • Let the sauce simmer: Simmering the sauce for at least 30 minutes will help to develop its flavor and thicken it. The longer you simmer it, the thicker and more flavorful it will become.
  • Taste the sauce as you go: Be sure to taste the sauce as you're making it and adjust the seasonings as needed. You want the sauce to be flavorful, but not too salty or sweet.
  • Use the sauce on your favorite foods: Barbecue sauce is great on grilled or roasted meats, chicken, and fish. It can also be used as a dipping sauce for vegetables or as a marinade.

Conclusion:

Homemade barbecue sauce is a delicious and versatile condiment that can be used on a variety of foods. With just a few simple ingredients and a little bit of time, you can make a delicious barbecue sauce that will impress your friends and family. So next time you're firing up the grill, be sure to give this recipe a try!
