Another goodie from the Marlboro Cookbook.

Provided by Lynnda Cloutier

Categories     Other Breakfast

Number Of Ingredients 12

2 1/2 cups flour
1 1/2 cups packed light brown sugar
1 tbsp. shredded orange peel
1/2 t. salt
1/2 t. ground mace
1/2 cup butter or margarine
2 t. baking powder
1/2 t. baking soda
1 egg, beaten
3/4 cup buttermilk
1/2 t. ground cinnamon
1/3 cup chopped walnuts

Steps:

  • 1. Combine flour, brown sugar, orange peel, salt and mace in a mixing bowl; cut in butter until mixture resembles coarse crumbs. Measure 1/3 cup and set it aside.
  • 2. Add baking powder and soda to remaining crumbs. Combine egg and buttermilk; add to flour mixture, stirring until well mixed. Turn into a greased 9" square baking pan. Add cinnamon and walnuts to reserved crumbs; sprinkle evenly over batter.
  • 3. Bake in a 400 oven for 45 to 55 minutes or until a wooden pick inserted in center comes out clean. Makes 9 to 12 servings

Tips:

  • Mise en Place: Before you start baking, measure and prepare all of your ingredients. This will help you stay organized and ensure that you don't forget anything.
  • Proper Measuring: Use accurate measuring cups and spoons to ensure the correct proportions of ingredients. Incorrect measurements can affect the texture and flavor of your bread.
  • Fresh Ingredients: Use fresh, high-quality ingredients for the best flavor. Avoid using old or stale ingredients, as they can impact the taste and texture of your bread.
  • Kneading: Knead the dough until it becomes smooth and elastic. Proper kneading helps develop the gluten in the flour, which gives the bread its structure and texture.
  • Rising: Allow the dough to rise in a warm, draft-free place until it doubles in size. Proper rising ensures that the yeast has enough time to ferment and produce gas, which is essential for a light and fluffy bread.
  • Baking: Bake the bread in a preheated oven at the specified temperature. Check the bread regularly to ensure that it doesn't overcook. Overbaking can dry out the bread and make it tough.
  • Cooling: After baking, transfer the bread to a wire rack to cool completely before slicing and serving. This helps prevent the bread from becoming soggy.

Conclusion:

Sweet breakfast bread is a versatile and delicious treat that can be enjoyed for breakfast, brunch, or dessert. With careful preparation and attention to detail, you can create a moist, flavorful, and aromatic bread that will impress your family and friends. Experiment with different flavors and toppings to create a variety of sweet breakfast breads that everyone will love. Enjoy the baking process, and savor the sweet aroma and taste of your homemade bread!
