SWEET AND SOUR SAUCE- EASY

Sweet and Sour Sauce- EASY image

I got this recipe back in the mid 1970's from a Chinese cooking class. Its a versatile sauce that can be used for many dishes or a dip for egg rolls. One of my friends who is an authentic Chinese person was horrified. She told me it is no where near a real Chinese sweet and sour. I'm sorry Lee, but I do like it and its easy. ...

Time 15m

Number Of Ingredients 6

1 can(s) (8 ounces) crushed pineapple in own juice
1 c catsup
1 c unsweetened pineapple juice
1/2 c brown sugar, firmly packed
1/2 c cider vinegar
1 pinch dried red pepper flakes, optional

Steps:

  • 1. Pour un-drained canned pineapple in blender. Process until finely chopped. Pour pineapple into a medium saucepan with catsup, juice, brown sugar, and vinegar. If using pepper add now. Cook over medium/high heat, stirring, until mixture just begins to boil. Reduce heat and cook (stirring frequently) until mixture reaches the consistency you desire. Store any unused sauce in frig.
  • 2. Use to make any sweet and sour dish. Just stir fry meat and veggies and add this sauce before serving over rice. I like this as a dip for egg rolls, especially with the red pepper.

Tips:

  • Use fresh ingredients: Fresh ingredients will give your sauce the best flavor. If you can, use ripe pineapple, fresh ginger, and garlic. Don't use canned pineapple or frozen ginger.
  • Don't overcook the sauce: Overcooked sauce will be thick and gloopy. Cook the sauce just until it thickens and bubbles.
  • Use a variety of ingredients: Don't be afraid to experiment with different ingredients. You can add vegetables like carrots, celery, or bell peppers to your sauce. You can also add different spices like red pepper flakes or cumin.
  • Adjust the sauce to your taste: Some people like their sweet and sour sauce more sweet, while others like it more sour. You can adjust the amount of sugar and vinegar in the sauce to suit your taste.

Conclusion:

Sweet and sour sauce is a versatile sauce that can be used on a variety of dishes. It's great on chicken, pork, shrimp, and even vegetables. It's also a popular dipping sauce for egg rolls and spring rolls.

This recipe for sweet and sour sauce is easy to follow and makes a delicious sauce that is sure to please everyone. So next time you're looking for a quick and easy sauce to make, give this one a try.
