SUN OVEN BREADSTICKS

Yield 30 breadsticks

Number Of Ingredients 6

7/8 cup water
3 tablespoons olive oil, plus extra for brushing
3 cups unbleached white bread flour
1 1/2 teaspoons salt
1 1/2 teaspoons rapid-rise (instant) active dry yeast
poppy seeds, sesame seeds, and coarse sea salt for coating (optional)

Steps:

  • Pour the water and olive oil into the bread machine pan. Sprinkle the flour over the water and oil mixture, ensuring that it is completely covered. Add the salt in one corner of the pan. Make a small indentation in the center of the flour without going down as far as the liquid, and add the yeast. Set the bread machine to the dough setting. Press start. Line the dehydrating racks with silpat mats or parchment paper. Set Sun Oven out to preheat. When the dough cycle has finished, remove the dough from the machine, place it on a lightly floured surface and punch it down. Roll it out to a rectangle measuring 9 x 8 inches. Cut it into three 8-inch-long strips. Cut each strip widthwise into ten pieces. Roll and stretch each piece to ten inches. Roll in salt or seeds if using. Arrange on prepared racks, brush with olive oil, cover with plastic wrap and set aside in a warm place for 10 to 15 minutes. Bake in Sun Oven until golden, 40 to 60 minutes. Cool on racks.

Tips:

  • Proof the yeast correctly. Ensure the water is warm to the touch (around 110°F or 43°C) but not too hot, or you will kill the yeast. Let the yeast mixture sit for 5-10 minutes until it becomes foamy and bubbly. This indicates that the yeast is active and ready to use.
  • Knead the dough properly. Kneading helps to develop the gluten in the flour, which gives bread its structure and texture. Knead the dough for at least 5 minutes, or until it is smooth and elastic.
  • Let the dough rise in a warm place. This will allow the yeast to grow and produce carbon dioxide gas, which will cause the dough to rise. Place the dough in a warm spot (around 75-85°F or 24-29°C) for about 1-2 hours, or until it has doubled in size.
  • Shape the dough into breadsticks. You can use a rolling pin to roll out the dough into a long, thin rectangle. Then, cut the dough into strips about 1 inch wide.
  • Brush the breadsticks with olive oil. This will help them to brown nicely in the sun oven.
  • Bake the breadsticks in the sun oven. Place the breadsticks on a baking sheet and place them in the sun oven. Bake for about 15-20 minutes, or until they are golden brown and cooked through.

Conclusion:

Sun-oven breadsticks are a delicious and easy-to-make treat. With just a few simple ingredients and a little bit of time, you can enjoy fresh, homemade breadsticks that are perfect for any occasion. So next time you're looking for a fun and easy baking project, give sun-oven breadsticks a try!
