Tips:
- Choosing the Right Squash: Select firm, young summer squash with smooth, unblemished skin. Avoid squash with bruises or soft spots.
- Slicing the Squash: Cut the squash into thin slices for even cooking. This will also help them soften quickly.
- Cooking the Squash: Cook the squash until it's tender but still slightly firm. Overcooking can make it mushy.
- Sautéing the Onions: Sauté the onions in butter until they're translucent and slightly caramelized. This will add a depth of flavor to the casserole.
- Using Fresh Herbs: If you have fresh herbs on hand, add them to the casserole for an extra burst of flavor. Basil, oregano, and thyme all pair well with summer squash.
- Choosing the Right Cheese: Use a good quality sharp cheddar cheese for the best flavor. You can also experiment with other types of cheese, such as mozzarella, Parmesan, or Gruyère.
- Baking the Casserole: Bake the casserole until it's bubbly and the cheese is melted and golden brown. This usually takes about 30 minutes.
- Serving the Casserole: Let the casserole cool slightly before serving. It's delicious on its own or with a side of salad or roasted vegetables.
Conclusion:
This summer squash and onion cheesy casserole is a delicious and versatile dish that's perfect for a weeknight meal or a special occasion. It's easy to make and can be customized to your liking.
