Tips:

  • Choose the right apples: Use firm, tart apples like Granny Smith or Braeburn. These apples will hold their shape better during baking and provide a nice contrast to the sweet sultanas.
  • Slice the apples thinly: This will help them cook evenly and prevent them from becoming mushy.
  • Don't overcrowd the pan: Make sure the apple slices are spread out in a single layer so that they can cook evenly.
  • Use a combination of sugars: Brown sugar and white sugar will give the slice a nice caramelized flavor.
  • Add a little spice: A pinch of cinnamon or nutmeg will add a warm, autumnal flavor to the slice.
  • Don't overcook the slice: The apples should be tender but still hold their shape. Overcooking will make them mushy.
  • Serve the slice warm or at room temperature: It can be served with a dollop of cream or ice cream.

Conclusion:

Sultana and apple slice is a classic dessert that is perfect for any occasion. It is easy to make and always a crowd-pleaser. The combination of sweet sultanas and tart apples is a perfect balance of flavors, and the crumble topping adds a delicious crunch. Whether you serve it warm or at room temperature, this slice is sure to be a hit.
