Old-Fashioned Hamburger and Vegetable Stew image

In about 1 hour, you can have this easy stew on your table. Chock-full of vegetables and flavor, it's a mosaic of color and taste in your bowl. I always have fresh herbs, on hand, as well as most of the vegetables. Feel free to use dried herbs or canned vegetables, if you like, in this hearty stew.

2 sprigs fresh rosemary
2 sprigs fresh thyme
1 sprig fresh sage
1 piece cooking twine
1 large bay leaf
salt and ground black pepper to taste

HAMBURGER STEW

Hamburger Stew image

I love this stew because it is so easy to throw together, and it goes great with a hot pan of cornbread. I suggest Sweet Cornbread (recipe #83625). This recipe was my Great Grandma's and my Grandma taught it to me. It was hard for me to put this in recipe format because it is all in my head. You can adjust some of the ingredients to suit your family.

SAUCY STEWED BURGERS

Saucy Stewed Burgers image

My mom's recipe, and one that she is known for in our neighborhood...by far, the best stewed burgers I have ever had. I make them with ground turkey, she uses beef...great either way!! Number of servings depends on how big you make the burgers.

Provided by Manda

Categories     Lunch/Snacks

Time 2h20m

Yield 10-12 serving(s)

Number Of Ingredients 16

2 lbs ground beef or 2 lbs ground turkey
1 slice day-old bread, cubed
1 egg
1/4 cup milk
garlic powder, salt and pepper
1 small onion, chopped
1 cup diced celery
1 diced green pepper
1 teaspoon salt
3 tablespoons lemon juice
3 tablespoons brown sugar
3/4 cup ketchup
2 tablespoons Worcestershire sauce
1 (14 ounce) can diced tomatoes
1 can tomato paste
hamburger bun, to serve

Steps:

  • Mix together all burger ingredients (I usually use my hands, seems easiest).
  • Form into patties.
  • Brown burgers in large skillet until cooked through.
  • In large saucepan or crockpot, combine all sauce ingredients; mix well.
  • Add burgers and cook over medium-low heat for 1 1/2 hours, stirring occasionally.
  • Serve in hamburger buns.

Tips:

  • Choose Ground Beef with the Right Fat Content: Select ground beef with a fat content of 80% to 90% for a flavorful and juicy stew. Leaner ground beef can result in a dry and less flavorful stew.
  • Brown the Beef Thoroughly: Properly browning the ground beef is crucial for adding depth of flavor to the stew. Cook the beef in a large skillet over medium-high heat, breaking it up into small pieces as it browns. This process should take about 5-7 minutes.
  • Use a Dutch Oven or Large Pot: A Dutch oven or large pot with a heavy bottom is ideal for making stews as it distributes heat evenly and prevents burning. Choose a pot that is large enough to hold all the ingredients comfortably.
  • Deglaze the Pan: After browning the beef, deglaze the pan with water, beef broth, or red wine to dissolve any browned bits stuck to the bottom. This adds extra flavor to the stew.
  • Use a Variety of Vegetables: Incorporate a wide variety of vegetables into your stew for added flavor, texture, and nutritional value. Common choices include carrots, potatoes, celery, onions, and peas.
  • Season Generously: Don't be afraid to season your stew well. Use a combination of salt, pepper, garlic powder, onion powder, and other herbs and spices to enhance the flavor.
  • Simmer for at Least an Hour: Allow the stew to simmer for at least an hour over low heat to develop rich flavors and tenderize the beef and vegetables.
  • Thicken the Stew (Optional): If you prefer a thicker stew, you can add a cornstarch or flour slurry towards the end of the cooking time. Whisk the cornstarch or flour with a little water until smooth, then stir it into the stew. Bring to a simmer and cook until thickened.
  • Serve with Accompaniments: Stewed hamburger is traditionally served with mashed potatoes, egg noodles, or rice. You can also offer a side of crusty bread or cornbread for dipping.

Conclusion:

Stewed hamburger is a classic comfort food that is easy to make and packed with flavor. With the right ingredients and techniques, you can create a delicious and hearty stew that your family and friends will love. Experiment with different vegetables, seasonings, and accompaniments to find your perfect stewed hamburger recipe. Whether you prefer a thick or thin stew, mild or spicy, there is a stewed hamburger recipe out there for everyone.
