Tips:

  • Choose the right squash: Select small to medium-sized summer squash that are firm and have smooth skin. Avoid squash that are bruised or have blemishes.
  • Prepare the squash: Wash the squash thoroughly and cut off the ends. If the squash is large, cut it into 1-inch thick slices. Otherwise, leave it whole.
  • Steam the squash: There are two ways to steam the squash:
    • In a steamer: Place the squash in a steamer basket over a pot of boiling water. Cover the pot and steam the squash for 5-7 minutes, or until it is tender-crisp.
    • In the microwave: Place the squash in a microwave-safe bowl with 1/4 cup of water. Cover the bowl and microwave the squash on high for 3-4 minutes, or until it is tender-crisp.
  • Season the squash: Once the squash is cooked, season it with butter, salt, and pepper. You can also add other herbs and spices, such as garlic powder, onion powder, or paprika.
  • Serve the squash: Steamed summer squash can be served as a side dish or as a main course. It can also be used in salads, soups, and stews.
