1 large onion, sliced
3 tablespoons canola oil
1/3 cup all-purpose flour
1-1/2 teaspoons ground allspice
1 teaspoon salt
1 teaspoon pepper
1/2 teaspoon ground ginger
1-1/2 pounds beef top round steak, cut into 1-inch cubes
2 cups boiling water
1-1/2 cups diced peeled potatoes
1 cup diced carrots
1 cup frozen peas
1 sheet refrigerated pie crust

Steps:

  • In a Dutch oven, lightly brown onion in oil. Meanwhile, combine the flour, allspice, salt, pepper and ginger in a large shallow bowl. Add meat cubes, a few pieces at a time, and toss to coat. , Remove onion and set aside. Brown beef on all sides. Add water; cover and simmer until meat is tender, about 1 hour, stirring occasionally. , Add potatoes, carrots and reserved onions; cover and cook for 10 minutes. 1 cup onion, sliced
1/4 cup shortening
1 lb. round steak, cut into small pieces
1/4 cup flour
2 tsp. salt
1/2 tsp. paprika
dash ginger
dash allspice
2 1/2 cups boiling water
2 cups raw potatoes, diced
1/8 tsp. pepper
dough for 1 pie crust

Steps:

  • 1. Cook onion slowly in shortening til yellow. Remove onion and set aside.
  • 2. Roll meat in mixture of flour, seasonings and spices. Brown in hot shortening. Add boiling water; simmer, covered, til meat is tender, about 1 hour. Add potatoes and cook for 10 minutes longer.
  • 3. Roll pie dough into circle, about 1/4 inch thick. Make several openings for steam to escape. Pour meat and potatoes into greased 8 inch casserole. Cover with reserved onion. Fit pastry over top and seal edges. Bake at 450 for 25 to 30 minutes. Serves 6
