GOLDEN YELLOW SPLIT PEA SOUP (CROCKPOT / SLOW COOKER)

Golden Yellow Split Pea Soup (Crockpot / Slow Cooker) image

I modified this from a Food and Wine recipe--and I think it is a keeper! We like to have it with grilled ham and cheese (or just cheese for Lent). I especially like this as the seasoning is a little different and makes a nice change from our usual split pea and ham soup.

CROCKPOT SPLIT PEA, LENTIL, AND BARLEY SOUP AKA WEIGHT WATCHERS

Crockpot Split Pea, Lentil, and Barley Soup Aka Weight Watchers image

I made split pea and barley soup and was left with only a little bit of each left. I made Lentil soup, and was left with only a little bit of the bag left. I really, really wanted split pea soup tonight, so I decided to put a little bit of each in and see how it goes. I also added some turkey pepperoni instead of ham (so feel free to use whatever smoky meat you want) because...I didn't have any ham! The outcome was something unexpectedly delicious, and I think I'll be making this quite a bit in the future! By the way, each portion of this is 6 very filling Weight Watchers points (recalculating for the new system) without the turkey pepperoni. With the turkey pepperoni, it's 7.

Number Of Ingredients 11

1 bag 16 oz package dried green split peas, picked over and rinsed.
1 piece Hambone, or 2 ham hocks, or 2 cups diced ham
3 Carrots peeled, sliced
1/2 cup Chopped onion
2 Celery ribs with leaves, chopped
2 Garlic cloves
1 Bay leaf
1/4 cup Fresh parsley chopped
1 tablespoon Seasoned salt
1/4 teaspoon pepper
1 1/2 quarts Hot water

Steps:

  • Layer ingredients in slow cooker in the order given; pour in water. Do not stir ingredients. Cover and cook on HIGH 4 to 5 house or on low 8-10 hours until peas are very soft and ham falls off one. Remove bones and bay leaf. Mash peas to thicken if desired. Serve garnished with croutons. Freezes well.

Tips:

  • Soaking the split peas is not necessary: Unlike other dried beans or lentils, split peas do not require soaking before cooking. This saves time and makes the soup easier to prepare.
  • Use a variety of vegetables: The recipe calls for carrots, celery, and onion, but you can also add other vegetables like potatoes, parsnips, or turnips. This will add more flavor and nutrients to the soup.
  • Don't overcook the split peas: Split peas cook quickly, so it is important to avoid overcooking them. Overcooked split peas can become mushy and lose their flavor.
  • Season the soup to taste: The recipe includes basic seasonings like salt, pepper, and garlic powder, but you can also add other herbs and spices to taste. Some popular additions include thyme, rosemary, and paprika.
  • Serve the soup with a variety of toppings: Some popular toppings for split pea soup include croutons, shredded cheese, and bacon bits. You can also serve the soup with a side of bread or crackers.

Conclusion:

Split pea soup is a delicious and hearty soup that is perfect for a cold winter day. It is easy to make and can be tailored to your own taste preferences. Whether you like your soup thick or thin, mild or spicy, there is a split pea soup recipe out there for you. So next time you are looking for a warm and comforting meal, give split pea soup a try.
