Provided by Trisha Yearwood

Categories     appetizer

Time 35m

Yield 6 servings

Number Of Ingredients 12

1 round loaf sourdough or country bread, 6 to 7 inches in diameter
2 tablespoons butter
1 medium shallot, finely chopped
1 clove garlic, minced
1 pinch crushed red pepper flakes
1 pound chopped frozen spinach, thawed
One 15-ounce can quartered artichoke hearts, drained
6 ounces cream cheese, cubed
1 cup shredded mozzarella
Kosher salt and freshly ground black pepper
3 tablespoons grated Parmesan
Assorted crudites, for serving

Steps:

  • Preheat the oven to 400 degrees F.
  • Cut off the top of the bread. Use your fingers to remove the crumb from the center of the bread, leaving only the crust as a wall (discard the crumb or reserve it for another use, such as making breadcrumbs).
  • Melt the butter in a medium skillet over medium heat, then add the shallots, garlic and red pepper flakes. Cook, stirring occasionally, until softened about 3 minutes. Add the spinach and artichokes and cook, stirring, until hot, about 3 minutes. Add the cream cheese and cook, stirring, until melted. Stir in the mozzarella and season with salt and pepper.
  • Spoon the mixture into the bread bowl, mounding it slightly if necessary, and sprinkle with the Parmesan. Place the bread and the top side by side on a baking sheet and bake until the bread is hot and crusty and the top of the spinach dip is lightly browned, about 15 minutes. Transfer the bread bowl to a serving platter. Tear the top of the bread into chunks and serve alongside the dip with crudites for dipping.

SPINACH DIP

Spinach Dip image

Preparing for the Super Bowl? Think bread bowl. This spinach dip is housed in a hollowed-out loaf of bread. Choose pumpernickel or sourdough and have other items for dipping on hand-those bread bites go fast!

Provided by Melinda Anderson

Categories     Dairy     No-Cook     Super Bowl     Spinach     Winter

Number Of Ingredients 5

10 ounces frozen spinach
1 Knorr vegetable soup mix
1 1/2 cups sour cream
1 cup mayonnaise
1 loaf sourdough or pumpernickel bread

Steps:

  • Mix ingredients well. Chill dip at least two hours.
  • Hollow out a round sourdough bread loaf or pumpernickel loaf and fill with the dip. Cut the middle section of the bread into squares and place around the dip instead of crackers.

Tips:

  • Choose fresh spinach: Fresh spinach leaves provide the best flavor and texture for the dip. Look for spinach with deep green leaves and no signs of wilting.
  • Use a variety of cheeses: A combination of cheeses, such as cream cheese, cheddar cheese, and Parmesan cheese, creates a rich and flavorful dip. You can also add crumbled bacon, chopped walnuts, or diced red peppers for extra flavor and texture.
  • Don't overcook the spinach: Overcooked spinach will become mushy and lose its vibrant color. Cook the spinach just until it is wilted, about 1-2 minutes.
  • Drain the spinach thoroughly: After cooking the spinach, drain it thoroughly to remove any excess water. This will help to prevent the dip from becoming watery.
  • Chill the dip before serving: Chilling the dip allows the flavors to meld and develop. Serve the dip cold or at room temperature.

Conclusion:

Spinach dip in a bread basket is a delicious and easy-to-make appetizer that is perfect for any occasion. With its creamy texture, cheesy flavor, and crispy bread bowl, this dip is sure to be a hit with your family and friends.
