CHEESE SQUARES APPETIZER

Cheese Squares Appetizer image

This is a wonderful baked appetizer blending the tastes of Cheddar cheese and jalapeno peppers. The amount of jalapenos used can easily be adjusted to personal taste, although baking does take a lot of the burn out of the peppers. I've made this several times and I never have leftovers. My husband wishes I would make these for him every day. I don't recommend doubling the recipe; make multiple batches instead.

SPINACH CHEESE SQUARES

I found this in my mother's collection of recipe clippings, from the 1960's. The only change I made was to reduce the salt to one-half teaspoon. You could probably substitute frozen chopped spinach to save time. I think these taste great at room temperature.

Provided by Nancy Clemens

Categories     Cheese Appetizers

Time 1h

Number Of Ingredients 8

1 pkg frozen chopped spinach (small box type in grocery freezer) thawed and squeeze out excess water
1 c milk
1 c flour
1 tsp baking powder
1 tsp salt
1/4 lb butter, softned
1 lb monterey jack cheese, cubed
2 eggs

Steps:

  • 1. Mix together in bowl and spread in a 9x13" pan. ( I use 9x13" glass pan)
  • 2. Bake in 350 degree oven for 40-45 minutes.
  • 3. Cut into small squares to serve. Can be eaten cold.

Tips:

  • Prepare Ingredients in Advance: Before starting, measure and chop all ingredients to save time and ensure smooth cooking.
  • Use Fresh Spinach: Fresh spinach leaves yield the best flavor and texture in this recipe. If using frozen spinach, thaw and squeeze out excess water thoroughly.
  • Don't Overcook the Spinach: Wilting the spinach briefly retains its vibrant green color and prevents it from becoming mushy.
  • Use Quality Cheese: Opt for high-quality cream cheese, Parmesan, and mozzarella cheese for a rich and flavorful filling.
  • Chill Before Baking: Chilling the filling before baking helps it set and prevents the squares from spreading too much in the oven.
  • Bake Until Golden Brown: Bake the squares until the tops are golden brown and the filling is bubbly. This ensures a crispy exterior and a gooey, melted cheese center.
  • Serve Warm or at Room Temperature: These spinach cheese squares can be enjoyed warm out of the oven or at room temperature. They are perfect for parties, potlucks, or as a quick and easy snack.

Conclusion:

Spinach appetizer cheese squares are a delightful and versatile dish that combines the vibrant flavors of spinach, cream cheese, Parmesan, and mozzarella cheese. With a crispy phyllo dough exterior and a gooey, melted cheese center, these squares are sure to be a hit at any gathering. Whether you serve them as an appetizer, a main course, or a snack, these squares are a delicious way to enjoy the goodness of spinach.
