SPICY BAKED BEANS

Spicy Baked Beans image

Tangy and sweet old-fashioned baked beans with a little jalapeno. They're easy to make and great at a BBQ, hamburger night, a picnic, etc. My husband's favorite semi-homemade recipe. Says the sweetness and fire create a super depth of flavor. It's not strong enough to overwhelm the sweet home-style of baked beans.

Time 2h30m

Yield 18 servings

Number Of Ingredients 13

4 slices regular bacon, diced
1 medium onion, cut into small dice
1 medium green bell pepper, cut into small dice
1 red bell pepper, cut into small dice
1 fresh jalapeno, chopped
4 large cans (28 ounces each) pork and beans
1 cup barbecue sauce

Add the onions, peppers and jalapenos, and saute until tender, about 5 minutes. Add the beans, barbecue sauce, brown sugar, vinegar, ketchup, mustard and chipotles, and bring to a simmer. (If the skillet is not large enough, add the beans and heat to a simmer and then transfer to a large bowl and stir in the remaining ingredients). Pour the flavored beans into an aluminum pan. SPICY BAKED BEANS

Spicy Baked Beans image

My spin on a Jimmy Dean bakeoff winner 2005. In my picture, I made 1/2 the recipe which makes plenty. I kept the full amount (1 lb) pork sausage, used chipotle powder for the red pepper and would cut back on the black pepper if you like it less spicy.

Categories     Pork

Time 1h5m

Yield 16-20 serving(s)

Number Of Ingredients 12

1 lb jimmy dean ground pork sausage

1/4 cup yellow mustard
fresh lemon juice, 1 squirt (optional but very good)
1 teaspoon black pepper
1/2 teaspoon ground red pepper
1 teaspoon garlic powder

Tips:

  • Prep the Beans: Before starting, rinse and sort the dried beans to remove any debris. Soaking the beans overnight in water softens them and reduces cooking time.
  • Use Quality Spices: Fresh, whole spices like cumin, chili powder, and paprika add more flavor compared to pre-ground options.
  • Sauté the Aromatics: Sautéing onions, bell peppers, and garlic in a little oil enhances their flavors and adds depth to the dish.
  • Cook the Beans Properly: Simmer the beans in a flavorful liquid until tender, about 1-2 hours. Keep an eye on the beans to prevent overcooking.
  • Add Fresh Herbs: Incorporate fresh cilantro and green onions just before serving for a pop of color and extra flavor.

Conclusion:

Spicy Southwest Baked Beans are a delicious and versatile dish perfect for potlucks, barbecues, or weeknight meals. Experiment with different chili peppers to adjust the heat level and use a variety of beans, such as black beans, pinto beans, or a mix. Serve with your favorite accompaniments like cornbread, rice, or tortilla chips. Enjoy the smoky, spicy, and satisfying flavors of this Southwest-inspired baked bean recipe!
