Season with chili powder, 2 tablespoons cumin, brown sugar, pepper sauce, basil, paprika, salt, oregano, and black pepper. Bring to a boil and reduce heat to medium-low. Cover and simmer until meat and vegetables are very tender and flavors have developed in the chili, about 90 minutes, stirring occasionally.
  • Mix kidney beans into beef and vegetables. Continue to simmer until beans are hot, about 30 minutes more.
  • Blend sour cream, cilantro, and remaining 1/2 teaspoon cumin in a food processor until smooth. Serve sour cream mixture with chili.

Tips:

  • Choose the right peppers: For a milder chili, use fewer jalapeños and more bell peppers. For a spicier chili, use more jalapeños and fewer bell peppers. You can also use a combination of different types of peppers, such as serrano peppers or habanero peppers, to create a unique flavor profile.
  • Roast the peppers: Roasting the peppers brings out their natural sweetness and flavor. You can roast the peppers in the oven or on a grill. If you're roasting them in the oven, preheat the oven to 400 degrees Fahrenheit and roast the peppers for 15-20 minutes, or until they are charred and blistered. If you're roasting them on a grill, heat the grill to medium-high heat and grill the peppers for 10-12 minutes, or until they are charred and blistered.
  • Remove the seeds and ribs: Once the peppers are roasted, remove the seeds and ribs. This will help to reduce the heat of the chili. You can also wear gloves when handling the peppers to avoid getting capsaicin on your skin.
  • Use a variety of beans: Using a variety of beans in your chili adds flavor and texture. Some good options include black beans, pinto beans, kidney beans, and chickpeas. You can also use a combination of different types of beans, such as black beans and corn, to create a unique flavor profile.
  • Add spices and seasonings: Spices and seasonings are essential for creating a flavorful chili. Some good options include chili powder, cumin, oregano, paprika, and garlic powder. You can also add other spices and seasonings, such as cayenne pepper or chipotle powder, to taste.
  • Simmer the chili for at least 30 minutes: Simmering the chili for at least 30 minutes allows the flavors to develop and meld together. You can simmer the chili for longer if you want a more flavorful chili.

Conclusion:

Spicy Jalapeño and Bell Pepper Chili is a delicious and easy-to-make recipe that is perfect for a cold winter day. The combination of roasted peppers, beans, and spices creates a flavorful and hearty chili that is sure to please everyone. This recipe is also a great way to use up leftover peppers and beans.
