My father came up with this recipe when I lived at home. He always added the optional cayenne pepper, and we four kids would mop up the chili with slices of bread. I don't use the cayenne for my family, but it still warms you up on cold days.

Tips:

  • Use a variety of beans: Different beans offer different flavors and textures, so using a mix will create a more complex and interesting chili.
  • Soak your beans overnight: This will help to reduce cooking time and make the beans more digestible.
  • Don't overcook the beans: Overcooked beans will become mushy and lose their flavor.
  • Use a flavorful broth: The broth you use will add a lot of flavor to the chili, so choose one that you enjoy.
  • Add plenty of spices: Chili is all about the spices, so don't be afraid to add a variety of them.
  • Let the chili simmer for a while: This will allow the flavors to meld and develop.
  • Serve with your favorite toppings: Some popular toppings for chili include cheese, sour cream, onions, and cilantro.
