Apple-Pie Spiced Cider image

Season your cider with the same spices you would use in a pie -- cinnamon, allspice, ginger, cloves, and nutmeg -- then heat it up.

Provided by Martha Stewart

Categories     Food & Cooking     Drink Recipes

Number Of Ingredients 9

1 1/4 quarts apple cider
3 tablespoons firmly packed light-brown sugar
7 whole cinnamon sticks, (6 sticks for garnish)
1 teaspoon ground allspice
1/2 teaspoon ground ginger
Ground cloves
Freshly grated nutmeg
Salt
1/2 cup Calvados, or other brandy (optional)

Steps:

Tips:

  • Choose the right apples. For a sweeter cider, use sweeter apples like Honeycrisp or Gala. For a tarter cider, use tarter apples like Granny Smith or Braeburn.
  • Don't overcook the spices. If you cook the spices for too long, they will become bitter.
  • Use fresh spices. Fresh spices have more flavor than dried spices.
  • Experiment with different combinations of spices. There are many different ways to spice up hot apple cider. Try experimenting with different combinations of spices until you find one that you like.
  • Add a little sweetness. If you find that your hot apple cider is too tart, you can add a little bit of sugar or honey to sweeten it up.
  • Serve hot apple cider with a garnish. A slice of apple, a cinnamon stick, or a dollop of whipped cream are all great garnishes for hot apple cider.
