SPICED APPLE HOLIDAY HAM

Spiced Apple Holiday Ham image

My grandmother always made pineapple ham, but I decided that rosy red apple rings look & taste even more festive. You can also make the apple rings from scratch by simmering a pan of water with apple slices, red hots, sugar, & a bit of red food coloring.

Time 2h15m

Number Of Ingredients 6

1 fully cooked bone in ham (6-8 pounds)
1 tsp whole cloves
1 jar(s) spiced apple rings (14.5 ounces)
1 c packed brown sugar
2 Tbsp yellow mustard
10-12 green maraschino cherries

Steps:

  • 1. Preheat the oven to 350 degrees F. Place the ham in a roasting pan cut side down. Score ham with a shallow diamond shaped pattern. Insert cloves into cuts. Cover ham with foil & bake for about 1 1/2 hours.
  • 2. Meanwhile, drain the liquid from the apple rings into a small saucepan. Whisk in the brown sugar & mustard. Bring mixture to a boil, then reduce heat to a simmer. Cook until mixture is thickened & coats the back of a spoon.
  • 3. Remove foil from ham & brush with the glaze. Secure apple rings & cherries to the ham with toothpicks. Bake uncovered for 30 minutes or until heated through.

Tips:

  • Choose a high-quality ham: Look for a ham that is fully cooked and bone-in. A bone-in ham will be more flavorful and moist than a boneless ham.
  • Score the ham: Use a sharp knife to score the ham in a diamond pattern. This will help the glaze penetrate the ham and create a crispy crust.
  • Make a flavorful glaze: Use a combination of spices, herbs, and liquids to create a flavorful glaze for the ham. Some popular ingredients include brown sugar, honey, maple syrup, mustard, and cloves.
  • Bake the ham at a low temperature: Bake the ham at a low temperature (325 degrees Fahrenheit) for several hours. This will help the ham cook evenly and prevent it from drying out.
  • Let the ham rest before carving: Let the ham rest for at least 15 minutes before carving. This will allow the juices to redistribute throughout the ham.

Conclusion:

Spiced holiday ham is a delicious and festive dish that is perfect for any special occasion. By following these tips, you can make a ham that is moist, flavorful, and sure to impress your guests.
