Time 25m

Number Of Ingredients 14

1 red apple (the better the apple the better the flavor of the sangria!, sliced thin)
1 cup of diced pineapple
2 oranges (sliced into thin rounds)
2 tablespoons sugar
1 cup of red grapes (frozen)
1/2 cup brandy
1/2 cup orange liqueur (Gran Marnier is preferred, otherwise use Triple Sec)
3/4 cup pineapple juice
8 fresh sprigs of mint
2 cinnamon stick
1 star anise (optional)
2 750 ml bottles of chilled Spanish cava (I prefer to make with brut and add sugar to taste. But if you like it on the sweet side buy semi-seco or even dulce)
Sugar or simple syrup to taste
Ice cubes

Steps:

  • In a large bowl combine the sliced apple, orange and diced pineapple. Cover with two tablespoons of sugar and let sit for at least 10 minutes.
  • Add the brandy, orange liqueur, pineapple juice, mint and spices. Using the back of a wooden spoon, muddle the mint and fruit just a bit.
  • Chill this mixture (if possible) for at least an hour.
  • Before serving, add the chilled cava and frozen grapes, and lightly stir to combine. Adjust for sweetness by adding sugar (superfine is best) or simple syrup. To serve, either ladle it into glasses filled with ice cubes, or into a serving pitcher filled halfway with ice.

Time 10m

Yield 12 (6-ounce) servings

Number Of Ingredients 5

2 cups well chilled seltzer or sparkling mineral water
1 cup well chilled peach brandy
1 cup superfine sugar
2 (750-ml) bottles well chilled Cava (Spanish sparkling wine)
About 4 cups assorted berries, such as blueberries, blackberries, and raspberries, rinsed and drained, for serving

Steps:

  • Stir the seltzer, brandy, and sugar together in a punch bowl. When the sugar is dissolved, uncork the sparkling wine and pour it gently into the bowl. Float about half the berries in the sangria and use the rest to decorate individual glasses.

Tips:

  • Choose a good quality cava: The better the cava, the better the sangria will be. Look for a cava that is fruity and has a good balance of acidity and sweetness.
  • Use fresh fruit: Fresh fruit will give the sangria the best flavor. Choose fruits that are in season and that are ripe.
  • Don't be afraid to experiment: There are many different ways to make sangria. Feel free to experiment with different fruits, juices, and spices to find a combination that you like.
  • Make sangria ahead of time: Sangria is best when it has had time to sit and meld the flavors. Make it at least a few hours before you plan to serve it, or even the day before.
  • Serve sangria chilled: Sangria is best served chilled. Serve it in a pitcher with ice cubes or in individual glasses.
