Indulge your senses with our tantalizing Southwest Surprise Bread, an explosion of flavors and textures that will leave you craving for more. This delectable creation seamlessly blends the bold, smoky, and tangy flavors of the Southwest, resulting in a culinary masterpiece that is both comforting and exciting. With its golden-brown crust, soft and fluffy interior, and pockets of savory fillings, this bread is perfect for any occasion, whether it's a casual brunch, a potluck gathering, or a hearty snack.
The Southwest Surprise Bread is a versatile dish that offers endless possibilities for customization. The basic recipe calls for a combination of all-purpose flour, cornmeal, baking powder, sugar, salt, and buttermilk, creating a slightly sweet and savory dough. Feel free to experiment with different types of flour, such as whole wheat or rye, to add a nutty flavor and extra texture.
The fillings are where the magic truly happens. The recipe includes a flavorful combination of cooked ground beef, black beans, corn, diced green chilies, and a blend of chili powder, cumin, and oregano. However, you can easily tailor the fillings to your preferences. For a vegetarian version, swap the ground beef for sautéed vegetables like bell peppers, zucchini, and mushrooms. If you enjoy a bit of heat, add a pinch of cayenne pepper or a dash of sriracha sauce. Feel free to incorporate other ingredients that you love, such as diced tomatoes, crumbled feta cheese, or chopped cilantro.
Once the dough and fillings are prepared, the fun part begins. The bread is assembled by rolling out the dough, spreading the filling evenly, and then rolling it up tightly. Before baking, brush the top with melted butter and sprinkle with a mixture of cornmeal and chili powder for an extra layer of flavor and texture. The bread is then baked until golden brown and cooked through, filling your kitchen with an irresistible aroma.
Serve the Southwest Surprise Bread warm or at room temperature, sliced into thick wedges. It pairs wonderfully with a variety of sides, from simple green salads to creamy avocado slices. For a complete meal, accompany it with a bowl of chili or a dollop of sour cream. Leftovers, if there are any, can be stored in an airtight container in the refrigerator for up to 3 days or frozen for longer storage.
So, gather your ingredients, put on your apron, and embark on a culinary journey to the Southwest. Create your own version of the Southwest Surprise Bread and experience a burst of flavors that will tantalize your taste buds and leave you craving for more.

- Melt butter in heavy large skillet over medium-high heat. Add onions, bell peppers, all chilies, sage and oregano and sauté until vegetables are tender, about 10 minutes. Transfer to bowl with corn bread. Mix in cilantro, corn chips and corn kernels. Season to taste with salt and pepper. (Can be prepared 1 day ahead. Cover and refrigerate.) Mix eggs into stuffing.
- To bake stuffing in the turkey:
- Fill main turkey cavity with stuffing. Mix enough cream-style corn into remaining stuffing to moisten (about 1/2 to 3/4 cup cream-style corn, depending on amount of remaining stuffing). Spoon remaining stuffing into buttered baking dish. Cover with buttered foil. Bake stuffing in dish alongside turkey until heated through, about 40 minutes. Uncover and bake until top begins to brown, about 15 minutes.
- To bake all stuffing in pan:
- Preheat oven to 325°F. Butter 13x9x2-inch baking dish. Mix in 1 1/4 cups cream-style corn into stuffing. Transfer to prepared dish. Cover with buttered foil and bake until heated through, about 45 minutes. Uncover and bake until beginning to brown, about 20 minutes.
Tips:
- Use fresh ingredients whenever possible. This will give your bread the best flavor and texture.
- Don't overmix the dough. Overmixing will make the bread tough.
- Let the dough rise in a warm place. This will help it to double in size.
- Bake the bread in a preheated oven. This will help to create a crispy crust.
- Let the bread cool completely before slicing. This will help to prevent it from crumbling.
Conclusion:
Southwest Surprise Bread is a delicious and easy-to-make bread that is perfect for any occasion. It is a great way to use up leftover chicken or turkey, and it is also a great bread to serve at parties or potlucks. The bread is moist and flavorful, with a slightly spicy kick from the chili powder and cumin. The corn and black beans add a nice sweetness and texture to the bread.
