Tips:

  • Choose the right sweet potatoes: Look for sweet potatoes that are firm and smooth, with no blemishes or bruises. Avoid any that have cracks or soft spots.
  • Use a sharp knife to peel and cut the sweet potatoes: This will help to prevent the flesh from sticking to the knife and tearing.
  • Soak the sweet potatoes in cold water for 30 minutes before cooking: This will help to remove excess starch and make them cook more evenly.
  • Boil the sweet potatoes until they are tender: This should take about 15-20 minutes. You can check to see if they are done by piercing them with a fork - they should be soft all the way through.
  • Mash the sweet potatoes until they are smooth: You can use a potato masher, a food processor, or a hand mixer to do this.
  • Add your desired seasonings and mix well: This could include things like butter, brown sugar, cinnamon, nutmeg, and vanilla extract.
  • Serve the sweet potatoes warm: They can be enjoyed on their own, or as a side dish with roasted chicken, pork, or fish.

Southern sweet potatoes are a delicious and versatile dish that can be enjoyed for breakfast, lunch, or dinner. They are a good source of vitamins and minerals, and they can be made in a variety of ways.
