In the realm of Southern comfort food, few dishes reign supreme like the iconic duo of sausage gravy and biscuits. This delectable combination, often served as a hearty breakfast or brunch, is a symphony of flavors and textures that will tantalize your taste buds and warm your soul.

Our journey into the realm of sausage gravy and biscuits begins with the gravy itself, a luscious concoction made with savory sausage, creamy milk, and a touch of flour to create a velvety smooth sauce. The sausage, typically a spicy pork sausage, infuses the gravy with a robust, meaty flavor, while the milk lends a richness and creaminess that balances the spice. A hint of black pepper and a dash of cayenne add a subtle warmth and depth of flavor, creating a gravy that is both comforting and addictive.

The biscuits, on the other hand, are light, fluffy, and buttery, providing the perfect canvas for the rich and flavorful gravy. Made with simple ingredients like flour, butter, buttermilk, and a touch of baking powder, these biscuits are a testament to the power of Southern baking traditions. Their flaky layers and golden-brown crust create a textural contrast to the smooth gravy, making each bite an unforgettable experience.

Whether you prefer to dunk your biscuits in the gravy or use them to scoop up every last bit, this classic Southern dish is sure to satisfy your cravings and leave you feeling cozy and content. So gather your ingredients, preheat your oven, and embark on a culinary journey that will transport you to the heart of Southern hospitality.

This is a meal like my mother made. Neither the American Heart Association or Weight Watchers International would approve of this, but it's really good eat'n!

Provided by Danny Bennett1

2 lbs Bob Evans sausage (Regular, Sage or Hot)
1/2 lb bacon
2 teaspoons rubbed sage
1/4 lb real butter
2 cups flour
1/2 gallon whole milk (2% or skimmed will not work)

Steps:

  • Place flour into a dry non-stick frying pan over medium heat and cook until light brown.
  • Stir continually to prevent flour from burning.

Tips:

  • Use high-quality sausage: The type of sausage you use will make a big difference in the flavor of your gravy. Look for a sausage that is made with fresh, high-quality pork and has a good balance of spices.
  • Don't crowd the pan: When you're browning the sausage, don't crowd the pan. This will prevent the sausage from cooking evenly and will make it more likely to stick to the pan.
  • Use a good quality roux: The roux is the base of the gravy and it's important to use a good quality roux. Make sure the roux is cooked until it is a light golden brown color.
  • Add milk or cream slowly: When you're adding milk or cream to the gravy, do it slowly and whisk constantly. This will help to prevent the gravy from curdling.
  • Season to taste: Once the gravy is cooked, season it to taste with salt and pepper. You can also add other seasonings, such as garlic powder, onion powder, or cayenne pepper, to taste.

Conclusion:

Southern sausage gravy and biscuits is a classic Southern comfort food dish that is perfect for breakfast, lunch, or dinner. It's easy to make and can be tailored to your own taste preferences. Whether you like your gravy thick or thin, spicy or mild, this recipe has you covered. So next time you're looking for a hearty and satisfying meal, give Southern sausage gravy and biscuits a try.
