HENRY CLAY'S SOUTHERN MINT JULEP

Henry Clay's Southern Mint Julep image

In an age devoted to convenience and speed, the julep throws up some major hurdles. Although it contains only three ingredients -- sugar, bourbon and mint -- it requires time and patience to make. The drink requires large quantities of crushed ice. To lay the foundation for the drink, it is first necessary to muddle the sugar with a little bourbon and a few mint leaves. It should be served with two straws and garnished with a nice bush of mint, sprinkled with a little powdered sugar, please. And of course, you'll want to serve your juleps in a silver or pewter mug.

Tips:

  • Choose the right mint. Fresh mint is essential for a great mint julep. Look for mint with deep green leaves and a strong, refreshing aroma. Avoid mint that is wilted or bruised.
  • Use a good quality bourbon. The bourbon you use will have a big impact on the flavor of your mint julep. Choose a bourbon that is at least 80 proof and has a smooth, mellow taste.
  • Chill your ingredients. All of the ingredients for a mint julep should be chilled before you start making the drink. This will help to create a refreshing, flavorful julep.
  • Muddle the mint and sugar gently. When you muddle the mint and sugar, you want to release the mint's flavor without bruising the leaves. Use a light touch and muddle the ingredients for just a few seconds.
  • Add the bourbon and ice. Once the mint and sugar are muddled, add the bourbon and ice to the glass. Stir gently to combine.
  • Garnish with a mint sprig. A mint sprig is the perfect finishing touch for a mint julep. It adds a pop of color and a refreshing aroma.
