SOUTHERN BAKED HAM

This is the ham I use for the big holidays. Everyone looks foreword to it. My secret is that it's so easy. I pour the extra sauce in a small dish and use it for the ham--or my favorite is to pour it on homemade mashed potatoes. It's a VERY sweet sauce!

Tips:

  • Choosing the right ham: Look for a fully cooked ham with a bone-in for the best flavor. The size of the ham depends on the number of people you are serving.
  • Preparing the ham: Remove the ham from the packaging and rinse it under cold water. Pat it dry with paper towels.
  • Scoring the ham: Use a sharp knife to score the ham in a diamond pattern. This will help the glaze penetrate the ham and create a crispy crust.
  • Glazing the ham: Brush the ham with your favorite glaze. You can use a simple glaze made with brown sugar, honey, and spices, or you can get creative with your glaze. Some popular glazes include pineapple glaze, apricot glaze, and maple glaze.
  • Baking the ham: Place the ham in a roasting pan and bake it in a preheated oven until the internal temperature reaches 140°F. The cooking time will vary depending on the size of the ham.
  • Resting the ham: Once the ham is cooked, remove it from the oven and let it rest for 15 minutes before slicing and serving. This will allow the juices to redistribute throughout the ham, making it more flavorful.

Conclusion:

Southern Living Baked Ham is a classic dish that is perfect for any occasion. It is easy to make and always a crowd-pleaser. The crispy crust, flavorful glaze, and tender meat make this ham a delicious and satisfying meal. Serve it with your favorite sides, such as mashed potatoes, green beans, and cornbread, for a complete Southern feast.
