Suggested in a 1959 book as a terrific beverage to serve at a New Years Day Open House party. I don't know why it was given the "Southern" designation.

Tips:

  • Use fresh, high-quality ingredients: Fresh milk, cream, and eggs will give your eggnog the best flavor. Look for eggs that are free-range and organic, and use whole milk and heavy cream for a richer taste.
  • Temper the eggs: Slowly whisk the hot milk mixture into the beaten eggs to prevent them from curdling. This will help to create a smooth and creamy eggnog.
  • Chill the eggnog before serving: This will help to mellow the flavors and make the eggnog more refreshing. You can chill the eggnog for at least 4 hours, or overnight.
  • Garnish the eggnog with your favorite toppings: Grated nutmeg, whipped cream, and cinnamon sticks are all classic garnishes for eggnog. You can also get creative and add other toppings, such as chocolate shavings, crushed candy canes, or even fresh fruit.
