1 tablespoon vanilla extract
salt to taste

Steps:

  • Peel the sweet potatoes and cut them into slices.

SOUTHERN CANDIED SWEET POTATOES RECIPE - (4/5)

Southern Candied Sweet Potatoes Recipe - (4/5) image

Provided by msippigrl

Number Of Ingredients 6

6 to 8 medium red sweet potatoes (I had 9 long, skinny ones), peeled and cut into chunks or thick slices
1 stick salted butter, 1/2 cup
2 cups sugar
1 1/2 teaspoons ground cinnamon
1/4 teaspoon ground nutmeg
1/4 teaspoon salt

Steps:

  • Peel and chop potatoes as desired; then rinse and drain well in a colander. In a mixing bowl, whisk together the sugar, cinnamon, nutmeg, and salt. Set aside. Cut butter in chunks and melt in a large skillet (that has a cover) over medium heat. Add potatoes and stir to coat in the butter. Pour the sugar mixture over the potatoes and stir until coated well. Cover the skillet and cook over medium heat for 30-40 minutes, or until largest potato pieces are tender, stirring occasionally. (I use a toothpick to check for doneness.) Remove from heat, remove cover and let stand for 5-10 minutes before serving. Transfer to a serving dish and spoon sauce over top of the potatoes and serve.

Tips:

  • For a crispier crust, chill the sweet potatoes in the refrigerator for at least 30 minutes before baking.
  • To make sure the sweet potatoes are cooked evenly, turn them halfway through the baking time.
  • If you want a sweeter crust, increase the amount of brown sugar in the glaze.
  • If you want a spicier crust, add a pinch of cayenne pepper to the glaze.
  • Serve the sweet potatoes warm with a dollop of whipped cream or a scoop of vanilla ice cream.

Conclusion:

Southern candied sweet potatoes are a delicious and easy-to-make side dish that is perfect for any occasion. With their crispy crust, sweet and tangy glaze, and fluffy interior, these sweet potatoes are sure to be a hit with everyone at your table. So next time you're looking for a delicious and festive side dish, give these Southern candied sweet potatoes a try!
