Time 22m

Number Of Ingredients 14

4 cups flour
1 teaspoon baking soda
1/2 teaspoon baking powder
1 pinch salt
2 sticks butter, (softened to room temperature (1 cup) The original recipe calls for margarine, but that's just not how I roll)
1 1/2 cups granulated sugar
2 large eggs
1 cup sour cream
1 teaspoon vanilla extract
1 1/2 cups chopped walnuts ((optional, I've never actually had these cookies with nuts in all my years eating them))
1 1/2 cups confectioner's sugar
1 Tablespoon lemon juice (you could always sub lemon extract but maybe start with less and taste it before you add more)
1-2 Tablespoons water
Sprinkles, (optional)

Steps:

  • Preheat oven to 325 degrees and line sheet pans with parchment or silicone baking mats.
  • Combine flour, baking soda, baking powder and salt. Set aside.
  • In a large mixing bowl, beat together butter an granulated sugar.
  • Beat in eggs, sour cream and vanilla until well combined.
  • Add dry ingredients and beat until just combined. Fold in walnuts if using. The batter will be thick.
  • Drop Tablespoons (1 1/2 inch balls) of batter onto lined pans, about 2 inches apart.
  • Bake 12-15 minutes, until the edges are just beginning to turn golden. Cool.
  • Once they've cooled, you can glaze and serve. If you're planning on freezing these, you'll want to freeze them after baking but without the glaze.
  • Mix all ingredients until well combined well.
  • Dip the cookies into the glaze. Top with some sprinkles if you want a pop of color.
  • Set aside for a few minutes until the glaze has dried. Serve immediately or store in an airtight container on your counter.

Tips:

  • Make sure your butter and cream cheese are at room temperature before starting. This will help ensure they are evenly incorporated into the dough and create a smooth, creamy texture.
  • Use a spoon to carefully dollop the cookie dough onto the baking sheet, as dropping it can cause it to flatten out and lose its shape.
  • Bake the cookies until the edges are just beginning to brown. Overbaking can cause them to dry out and become crumbly, which might make them less delicious.
  • Allow the cookies to cool completely before rolling them in the powdered sugar mixture. This will help prevent the sugar from melting and becoming sticky.
  • Store the cookies in an airtight container at room temperature for up to 3 days, or in the freezer for up to 2 months.

Conclusion:

These sour cream anise cookies are a delightful sweet treat that offer a unique and flavorful twist on the classic Christmas cookie. With a soft, chewy texture and a subtle anise flavor, they're sure to be a hit with your family and friends. Whether you're baking them for a holiday party or just enjoying them as a special snack, these cookies will quickly become a favorite.
