This is one of my favorite classic Chinese dishes that my mom makes for Chinese New Year. It's easy to make and is very savory with rice!

1 pound pork spareribs
5 tablespoons water
3 tablespoons white vinegar
2 tablespoons white sugar
2 tablespoons light soy sauce
2 tablespoons dark soy sauce
1 tablespoon dry white wine
1 (8 ounce) can sliced pineapple

Steps:

  • Cut ribs into small pieces.
  • Heat a medium nonstick pot over medium-high heat. Sear ribs in the hot pot on all sides, about 5 minutes.
  • Whisk water, vinegar, sugar, both soy sauces, and wine together in a small bowl. Pour over ribs and reduce heat to medium-low. Add pineapple rings. Let stew until liquid evaporates and ribs are tender, about 1 hour. Don't let all the sauce dry up completely.
  • Serve ribs with pineapple rings.

I made this to go with some braised chicken wings the other night. So you may want to up rib amounts if serving as is and not with other dishes. This amount would serve 3-4 as a starter.

5 large ribs, chopped in half to make 10 (I get my butcher to do this.)
1 1/2 liters water
1 teaspoon beef stock granules
1/2 teaspoon five-spice powder
2 -3 tablespoons peanut oil
2 tablespoons light soy sauce
50 ml water
100 ml hoisin sauce (I use blue dragon brand)
1 teaspoon sugar
1 teaspoon fresh ginger, grated
2 tablespoons dry sherry

Steps:

  • Bring water, stock and five spice to the boil, add ribs and turn heat down to low and cook for about 90 Min's until pork can be pulled from the bone.
  • Drain pork, heat oil in a fry pan and fry pork on all sides to brown, serve immediately.
  • Sauce.
  • Combine all the ingredients in a pan and bring to the boil, serve ribs with sauce on the side.
  • I served my ribs with this sauce and sweet chili sauce so serve with whatever you enjoy.

2 tablespoons vegetable oil
3 pounds well-trimmed pork spareribs, cut into individual ribs
2 garlic cloves, minced
1 tablespoon minced peeled fresh ginger
3/4 cup (packed) golden brown sugar
3/4 cup rice vinegar
1/2 cup reduced-sodium soy sauce
1 teaspoon cornstarch dissolved in 1 tablespoon cold water (optional)
Steamed white rice

Steps:

  • Heat vegetable oil in large wide shallow pot over medium-high heat. Working in batches, add ribs and brown on all sides, about 8 minutes. Transfer ribs to large bowl. Add garlic and ginger to pot; sauté 30 seconds. Add brown sugar, vinegar, and soy sauce. Stir to blend. Return ribs to pot. Cover pot and simmer over medium-low heat until meat is tender, turning ribs occasionally, about 45 minutes. If sauce is thin, gradually add cornstarch mixture to ribs and simmer until sauce thickens slightly, about 2 minutes. Serve ribs over rice.
