SLOW COOKER SOUTHERN LIMA BEANS AND HAM

Slow Cooker Southern Lima Beans and Ham image

I searched your website for the simple lima bean recipe that my mom used to make and the one that is served by many restaurants here in the south as a side dish. I couldn't find one, so I submitted my own. This is an easy, basic lima bean dish with ham, onion, and seasonings. Served over Mexican cornbread, it makes a delicious hearty meal. You can also do this on the stovetop. Just follow the directions on the back of the lima bean bag and add the seasonings. Slow cooker time is about 7 hours. Add a side salad for a complete meal.

Tips:

  • Choose the right turkey: For the best flavor, use a bone-in, skin-on turkey breast or thigh. Dark meat is more flavorful than white meat, so using a combination of both is ideal.
  • Brown the turkey before stewing: Browning the turkey adds flavor and depth to the stew. To do this, heat a large pot or Dutch oven over medium-high heat. Add the turkey and cook, stirring occasionally, until browned on all sides.
  • Use a variety of vegetables: This recipe calls for carrots, celery, and onion, but you can also add other vegetables, such as potatoes, green beans, or peas.
  • Use a flavorful broth: The broth is the base of the stew, so make sure to use a flavorful one. You can use chicken broth, turkey broth, or vegetable broth.
  • Season the stew well: Season the stew with salt, pepper, garlic powder, and onion powder. You can also add other herbs and spices, such as thyme, rosemary, or sage.
  • Cook the stew until the turkey is tender: The turkey should be cooked until it is tender and falls apart easily. This usually takes about 2-3 hours on low in a slow cooker.

Conclusion:

This slow cooker turkey stew with lima beans is a hearty, flavorful, and easy-to-make meal. It's perfect for a weeknight dinner or a casual weekend gathering. The turkey is tender and juicy, and the vegetables are cooked to perfection. The lima beans add a touch of sweetness and creaminess to the stew. Serve this stew with a side of mashed potatoes, rice, or bread for a complete meal.
