Tips:

  • Choose the right cornmeal. Masa harina is a type of cornmeal made from dried corn that has been treated with lime. It is the traditional ingredient used to make tamales, and it gives them their characteristic flavor and texture. If you can't find masa harina, you can use regular cornmeal, but the tamales will not be as authentic.
  • Soak the corn husks properly. The corn husks need to be soaked in warm water for at least 30 minutes before you can use them. This will make them pliable and easy to work with.
  • Don't overfill the tamales. The tamales should be filled just enough so that they can be folded closed without bursting. If you overfill them, they will be difficult to handle and they may fall apart.
  • Cook the tamales until they are done. The tamales are done when they are firm to the touch and the corn husks are easily peeled away. If you undercook the tamales, they will be mushy and the corn husks will be difficult to remove.
  • Serve the tamales hot. Tamales are best served hot, either on their own or with your favorite toppings. Some popular toppings include salsa, guacamole, sour cream, and cheese.

Conclusion:

Tamales are a delicious and versatile dish that can be enjoyed by people of all ages. They are perfect for parties and potlucks, and they can also be made ahead of time and frozen. With a little planning, you can easily make tamales at home. So next time you're looking for something new to try, give tamales a try!
