SLOW-COOKER GRITS

Slow-Cooker Grits image

Since moving to the South, I have come to love grits! I also love my slow cooker, and I worked to find a way to make perfect grits without stirring on the stovetop. I knew this slow-cooker grits recipe was a winner when my mother-in-law overheard someone at a church potluck say that "it just wasn't right that a Midwesterner could make such good grits!" —Tacy Fleury, Clinton, South Carolina

Tips:

  • Use the right type of grits. Quick-cooking grits will cook in about 15 minutes, while old-fashioned grits will take about 30 minutes. Steel-cut grits have a chewier texture and will take about 45 minutes to cook.
  • Rinse the grits before cooking. This will help to remove any dirt or debris.
  • Use a slow cooker with a low setting. This will help to prevent the grits from sticking to the bottom of the pot and burning.
  • Add liquid to the slow cooker before adding the grits. This will help to prevent the grits from clumping together.
  • Stir the grits occasionally during cooking. This will help to prevent them from sticking to the bottom of the pot.
  • Add salt and butter to taste. Grits are a blank canvas, so you can flavor them however you like.
  • Serve grits with your favorite toppings. Popular toppings include cheese, bacon, eggs, and hot sauce.

Conclusion:

Slow cooker grits are an easy and delicious way to enjoy this Southern classic. With a few simple ingredients and a little time, you can have a hot and hearty breakfast or dinner that the whole family will love. So next time you're looking for a quick and easy meal, reach for your slow cooker and give grits a try.
