1 large green bell pepper, diced
1/2 large onion, diced
1 1/2 cups ketchup
5 cloves garlic, minced
Hot sauce, such as Tabasco
Worcestershire sauce
Salt and freshly ground black pepper
8 kaiser rolls

Stir it around to combine, and then add the brown sugar, chili powder, dry mustard, red pepper flakes, and hot sauce, Worcestershire, salt and pepper to taste. Stir to combine, and then cover and simmer over medium-low heat, about 20 minutes.

Despite the name of this iconic retro dish, the secret to a great sloppy joe is a thick, rich, almost dry consistency, which allows the sandwich to be eaten with your hands. Serve on hamburger buns.

Time 1h10m

Yield 6

Number Of Ingredients 13

1 ½ pounds extra lean ground beef
½ onion, diced
2 cloves garlic, minced
1 green pepper, diced
1 cup water
¾ cup ketchup
1 dash Worcestershire sauce
2 tablespoons brown sugar
1 teaspoon Dijon mustard
1 ½ teaspoons salt, or to taste
½ teaspoon ground black pepper
1 cup water
1 pinch cayenne pepper to taste

Steps:

  • Place ground beef and onion in a large skillet. Turn heat to medium and cook and stir the mixture constantly until the beef is browned and forms small crumbles, about 10 minutes.
  • Stir in garlic and green bell pepper; cook and stir until softened, 2 to 3 minutes. Add 1 cup water and stir, scraping the pan to dissolve any brown flavor bits from the bottom of the skillet.
  • Mix in ketchup, Worcestershire sauce, brown sugar, Dijon mustard, salt, and black pepper. Add 1 more cup water and return mixture to a simmer. Reduce heat to low and simmer, stirring occasionally, until the liquid has evaporated and the mixture is thick, about 40 minutes.
  • Season with salt , black pepper, and cayenne pepper to taste.

Tips:

  • Use fresh ingredients. Fresh ground beef, vegetables, and spices will give your sloppy joes the best flavor.
  • Cook the beef thoroughly. Ground beef should be cooked to an internal temperature of 160 degrees Fahrenheit to ensure that it is safe to eat.
  • Don't overcook the beef. Overcooked beef will be tough and dry.
  • Use a good quality ketchup. The ketchup is the main ingredient in sloppy joes, so it's important to use a good quality brand that you enjoy the taste of.
  • Add some sweetness. A little bit of brown sugar or honey can help to balance out the acidity of the ketchup.
  • Add some heat. If you like spicy food, you can add some cayenne pepper or chili powder to the sloppy joe mixture.
  • Serve sloppy joes on a toasted bun. Toasted buns will help to hold up the sloppy joe mixture and prevent it from getting soggy.

Conclusion:

Sloppy joes are a quick and easy meal that can be enjoyed by people of all ages. They are perfect for a weeknight dinner or a casual weekend lunch. With a few simple ingredients, you can make a delicious and satisfying sloppy joe that will be a hit with your family and friends.
