Time 15m

Yield 4 serving(s)

Number Of Ingredients 5

1 can Swanson chicken broth or 1 can turkey broth
1 herb-ox beef flavor cube
1 teaspoon olive oil
2 tablespoons cornstarch
4 tablespoons water (to make corn starch slurry)

Steps:

  • Shake can of stock and pour into a sauce pan, add beef cube, olive oil and bring to a simmer.
  • In a small bowl combine the corn starch with some water about 4 tablespoons, and stir.
  • When stock comes to a boil add corn starch slurry.
  • Whisk.
  • The mixture will start to become thick, when the consistency is to your liking remove from heat.
  • If it doesn't thicken enough repeat step 2, by adding another portion of slurry.

Tips:

  • Use low-fat ingredients: This recipe uses skim milk and low-fat flour to reduce the fat content without sacrificing flavor.
  • Add vegetables: To boost the nutritional value and add flavor, try adding chopped carrots, celery, or onions to the gravy.
  • Use a brown sweetener: A brown sweetener, such as molasses or coconut sugar, will give the gravy a richer flavor than white sugar.
  • Season to taste: Don't be afraid to adjust the seasonings to your liking. Add more salt, pepper, or herbs until the gravy is flavorful but not overpowering.
  • Serve immediately: Gravy is best served immediately after it is made. If you need to make it ahead of time, store it in the refrigerator for up to 3 days or in the freezer for up to 3 months.

Conclusion:

Making gravy from scratch doesn't have to be difficult or time-consuming. This skinny gravy recipe is easy to follow and uses simple ingredients that you probably already have on hand. It's a delicious and versatile sauce that can be used on chicken, turkey, pork, or even vegetables. So next time you're looking for a healthy and flavorful gravy, give this recipe a try.
