ANN'S DIRTY RICE

Ann's Dirty Rice image

Quick and easy dinner. A family favorite. This was my mother's recipe. In my humble opinion she was the best cook ever. This recipe is very versatile and can be seasoned so many different ways. Please feel free to try your own favorite seasoning combinations. My two boys who are now 27 and 31 and my husband request this simple dinner frequently and I have taught the boys to make it but they say mine tastes different. I love to cook and they love to eat. This is such a simple recipe and I usually double so they have plenty to take home with them. It heats up well.

Tips:

  • Use medium-grain white rice: This type of rice is best for dirty rice because it absorbs the flavors of the other ingredients well and cooks up tender and fluffy.
  • Rinse the rice before cooking: This helps to remove the starch from the rice, which prevents it from becoming gummy.
  • Cook the rice in a flavorful liquid: This can be chicken broth, vegetable broth, or even water. Adding some chopped vegetables, such as celery, onion, and bell pepper, to the cooking liquid will also add flavor.
  • Brown the meat before adding it to the rice: This helps to develop the flavor of the meat and prevent it from becoming dry.
  • Add some vegetables to the dirty rice: This will add color, flavor, and nutrients to the dish. Some good options include celery, onion, bell pepper, and tomatoes.
  • Season the dirty rice to taste: This can be done with salt, pepper, garlic powder, onion powder, and cayenne pepper. You can also add some fresh herbs, such as parsley, cilantro, or thyme.
  • Let the dirty rice rest before serving: This allows the flavors to meld together and the rice to absorb all of the liquid.

Conclusion:

Dirty rice is a delicious and easy-to-make dish that is perfect for a weeknight meal. It is also a great way to use up leftover rice. With its flavorful combination of rice, meat, vegetables, and spices, dirty rice is sure to be a hit with everyone at the table.
