SHAKER SUGAR CREAM PIE

This pie is served at Shaker Village here in Kentucky as part of the dinner fare at the Trustee House. It is rich and creamy and delicious and if a whole pie is in the house with me around, it is in serious danger of turning up "missing".

Time 50m

Yield 8 serving(s)

Number Of Ingredients 7

1 1/4 cups flour
1 cup brown sugar
2 cups half-and-half
1/2 teaspoon vanilla
1/4 cup butter, cut into very small pieces
1 pinch nutmeg
9 inches unbaked pie shells

Steps:

  • Preheat the oven to 350 degrees.
  • Mix the flour and sugar and place in the bottom of the pie shell. Add the cream, vanilla, and the dots of butter. Sprinkle the top of the cream with nutmeg.
  • Bake for 40-45 minutes or firm. Cool completely and refrigerate before serving. Store in the refrigerator.

Tips:

  • For the pie crust, use a food processor to quickly and easily combine the ingredients. If you don't have a food processor, you can use a pastry blender or two forks to cut the butter into the flour until it resembles coarse crumbs.
  • When rolling out the pie dough, be sure to keep it cold. This will help to prevent the dough from becoming tough.
  • If you don't have a pie plate, you can use a 9-inch springform pan.
  • To make the sugar cream filling, be sure to use evaporated milk. This will help to give the filling its thick and creamy texture.
  • If you don't have nutmeg, you can use ground cinnamon or ground cloves instead.
  • Serve the pie warm or at room temperature. You can also top it with whipped cream or ice cream.

Conclusion:

Shaker Sugar Cream Pie is a delicious and easy-to-make dessert that is perfect for any occasion. The pie has a flaky crust, a creamy filling, and a sweet and spicy flavor. It is sure to be a hit with everyone who tries it.
