Number Of Ingredients 6

1 pound (4 sticks) unsalted butter, room temperature
1 1/2 cups sugar
3 cups all-purpose flour
2 cups shredded sweetened coconut
1 cup sesame seeds
1/2 cup finely chopped pecans

Steps:

  • Preheat oven to 300 degrees. Line baking sheets with Silpats (French nonstick baking mats).

  • Remove bowl from mixer; with a wooden spoon or your hands, stir in coconut, sesame seeds, and pecans. Divide dough into thirds. Roll into logs about 1 1/2 inches in diameter. Wrap each log in plastic, and refrigerate until very firm, about 2 hours.
  • Using a sharp knife, cut logs into 1/4-inch-thick slices. Transfer to prepared baking sheets, about 1 1/2 inches apart. Bake until edges are golden, 20 to 30 minutes. Transfer sheets to a wire rack to cool. Cool for 5 minutes on baking sheets before transferring cookies to wire racks to cool completely.

Tips:

  • Choose the Right Ingredients: Use high-quality bread flour or all-purpose flour for a chewy texture. Ensure the yeast is active and fresh for proper rising.
  • Proper Kneading: Knead the dough until smooth and elastic. This helps develop gluten and gives the knots their characteristic texture.
  • Resting the Dough: Allow the dough to rise in a warm place until doubled in size. This step is crucial for a light and airy texture.
  • Shape the Knots: Roll the dough into long ropes and tie them into knots. Make sure the knots are tight to prevent them from unraveling during baking.
  • Egg Wash and Sesame Seeds: Brush the knots with an egg wash and sprinkle them generously with sesame seeds before baking. This gives them a golden brown color and a delightful nutty flavor.
  • Baking Temperature: Bake the knots at a high temperature (400°F or 200°C) for a short time to achieve a crispy exterior and a soft, chewy interior.
  • Serve Fresh: Sesame knots are best enjoyed fresh out of the oven. They can be stored in an airtight container at room temperature for a few days or frozen for longer storage.
