Brown Rice...the Fast Way! image

Want to make brown rice but don't have an hour? Here's how to cook brown rice the fast way-and it turns out perfectly every time.

Provided by Sonja Overhiser

Categories     Essentials

Time 35m

Number Of Ingredients 3

1 cup long or short grain brown rice
6 cups water
1/4 teaspoon kosher salt

Steps:

  • Using a strainer, rinse the rice under cold water, then drain it completely. (Here's why.)
  • In a saucepan over high heat, bring the water to a boil. Add the rice and stir. Continue to boil uncovered until tender, with the water bubbling rapidly, for 20 minutes. Start tasting at 18 to 20 minutes: if the rice is tender, remove the heat. If not, keep cooking 5 to 10 minutes more until the rice is tender. (All rice types and brands are slightly different, so you'll have to adjust according to the specific rice. Ours is usually done in around 18 to 25 minutes.)
  • Pour the rice into a strainer, then return it to the pot. Cover the pot and allow the rice to steam for 5 minutes. Uncover and fluff the rice with a fork. Stir in the salt.

Tips:

  • Choose the right type of brown rice. There are many different types of brown rice available, each with its own unique flavor and texture. For this recipe, we recommend using a long-grain brown rice, such as basmati or jasmine. These types of rice have a light, fluffy texture that is perfect for side dishes.
  • Rinse the rice before cooking. This will help to remove any dirt or debris from the rice and will also help to prevent it from sticking together during cooking.
  • Use a flavorful cooking liquid. Instead of just using water to cook the rice, try using a flavorful liquid such as chicken broth, vegetable broth, or even coconut milk. This will add extra flavor to the rice.
  • Add seasonings and vegetables. Once the rice is cooking, feel free to add your favorite seasonings and vegetables. Some popular options include garlic, onion, bell pepper, carrots, and peas. You can also add herbs, such as parsley or cilantro, for extra flavor.
  • Cook the rice until it is tender but still has a slight bite to it. Brown rice typically takes about 45 minutes to cook, but the cooking time may vary depending on the type of rice you are using. Be sure to check the package directions for specific cooking instructions.

Conclusion:

Seasoned brown rice is a delicious and versatile side dish that can be served with a variety of meals. It is easy to make and can be tailored to your own taste preferences. Whether you like it simple or loaded with vegetables and seasonings, seasoned brown rice is a great way to add flavor and nutrition to your meals.
