When I was a child, I loved eating at my grandma's house, especially when she baked this comforting apple dish. As a busy mother of seven, I'm often short on time, so I use the microwave to fix it quickly. My family enjoys its "apple pie" flavor with a meal or topped with ice cream for dessert. -Sandy Daniels, Grandville, Michigan

Mad Apples Scalloped Potatoes image

I cut this recipe out of a magazine more than a dozen yers ago and finally decided to post it here so I don't lose it. The restaurant 'Mad Apples' is sadly no longer in business and if the rest of their food was as good as this simple dish it is a great loss. Please note: This is NOT diet fare :) Oh, and the recipe is posted exactly as written in the magazine. I like to add very thinly sliced onion to the mix.

Tips:

  • Choose firm, tart apples for baking, such as Granny Smith, Honeycrisp, or Braeburn. These apples will hold their shape and not become mushy when baked.
  • Use a sharp knife to thinly slice the apples. This will help them cook evenly.
  • If you don't have a mandoline, you can use a food processor fitted with a slicing blade to slice the apples.
  • Be sure to coat the apples in sugar and spices before baking. This will help them caramelize and develop a delicious flavor.
  • Bake the apples in a single layer so that they cook evenly.
  • If the apples start to brown too quickly, cover them with foil.
  • Serve the scalloped apples warm with whipped cream, ice cream, or your favorite topping.

Conclusion:

Scalloped apples are a classic dessert that is easy to make and always a crowd-pleaser. With their sweet and tangy flavor, these apples are the perfect way to end a meal. Whether you serve them warm or cold, scalloped apples are sure to be a hit.
