Sausage and Chicken Puff Pastry Shells image

Turn a boring, ordinary pot pie into a savory chicken and Jimmy Dean® sausage filling piled high on flaky puff pastry shells. Remember to thaw the puff pastry shells overnight in the refrigerator.

Provided by Lela

Time 1h15m

Yield 12

Number Of Ingredients 16

1 tablespoon unsalted butter
½ cup chopped baby bella mushrooms
2 (10 ounce) packages Pepperidge Farm Patty Shells-Puff Pastry
1 cup chopped carrots
1 cup chopped celery
1 cup chopped sweet onion
½ cup vegetable oil, divided
1 (16 ounce) package Jimmy Dean® Premium Pork Regular Sausage
6 tablespoons all-purpose flour
3 ½ cups milk
1 ½ teaspoons garlic salt, or more to taste
1 teaspoon onion powder
1 teaspoon garlic powder
¼ teaspoon ground black pepper
½ teaspoon poultry seasoning
2 cups shredded cooked chicken

Steps:

  • Preheat the oven to 425 degrees F (220 degrees C). Line a baking sheet with parchment paper.
  • Melt butter in a pan over medium heat. Cook and stir mushrooms until browned, 5 to 10 minutes. Set aside.
  • Arrange thawed puffed pastry shells on the prepared baking sheet. Bake in the preheated oven for 18 to 20 minutes. Cool on a wire rack for 5 minutes. Use a knife to remove the tops; reserve.
  • Meanwhile, heat 2 tablespoons oil in a large pot over medium-low heat. Add carrots, celery, and onion. Cover and cook, stirring frequently, until vegetables are soft, 15 to 20 minutes. Remove from heat and mix in mushrooms.
  • Add sausage to a large skillet over medium heat. Cook and stir with a spatula, breaking apart the sausage until cooked, about 8 minutes. Drain and set aside.
  • Heat remaining oil in a pot over medium-low heat. Add flour and cook, stirring constantly with a wire whisk, until browned, 2 to 30 minutes. Slowly pour in milk and stir constantly until blended. Add garlic salt, onion powder, garlic powder, black pepper, and poultry seasoning. Whisk until well blended. Cook and stir gravy until boiling, 3 to 5 minutes. Reduce heat to a simmer.
  • Stir the vegetable mixture, sausage, and chicken into the gravy. Taste and add more garlic salt if needed.
  • Spoon a generous serving of the sausage-chicken mixture into the puff pastry shells. Cover with the tops.

ITALIAN SAUSAGE IN PUFF PASTRY

Italian Sausage in Puff Pastry image

Great for an appetizer or a light main dish. I adapted this from a recipe that used polish sausage. You can use any type you like, i suppose, but I prefer the Italian with the Marinara sauce.

Provided by Kathie Carr

Categories     Meat Appetizers

Time 40m

Number Of Ingredients 6

1 lb fresh italian sausage, fully cooked
1 box frozen puff pastry (2 sheets)
2 Tbsp your favorite mustard
1 egg, beaten
1 Tbsp milk or water
1 c marinara sauce, optional for dipping

Steps:

  • 1. Defrost pastry in refrigerator overnight. Preheat oven to 400 degrees. Unfold pastry on a lightly floured board. Cut each piece in half length-wise and brush top and sides with mustard. Divide sausage in 4 pieces. Starting at the long end place one piece of sausage on pastry and roll up tightly. Brush water on end of log and seal tightly. Roll remaining sausage and pastry the same way.
  • 2. Place rolled pastry logs on baking sheet covered with parchment paper. Brush each roll with egg wash made of beaten egg mixed well with milk or water. Lightly score each roll diagonally with a knife to indicate 7 pieces from each roll. Do not cut through pastry, just score so cutting is easy later. Bake for 20-25 minutes until browned. Slice and serve immediately with Marinara sauce or more mustard.

EASY PUFF PASTRY SAUSAGE ROLLS

Easy Puff Pastry Sausage Rolls image

Store-bought puff pastry simplifies the preparation of this easy sausage roll recipe. It looks impressive (and it is delicious), but so quick and simple. A salad is all you need to complete the meal. It freezes well, too.

LAMB SAUSAGE IN PUFF PASTRY

Lamb Sausage in Puff Pastry image

Provided by Ina Garten

Time 1h

Yield 6 to 8 (28 appetizers)

Number Of Ingredients 4

1 pound fresh lamb sausage, 1/2 inch thick, in a coil
2 sheets (1 box) frozen puff pastry (preferably Pepperidge Farm), defrosted overnight in the refrigerator
2 tablespoons dijon mustard, plus more for dipping
1 egg, beaten with 1 tablespoon water or milk, for egg wash

Steps:

  • Preheat the oven to 400 degrees F.
  • Bake the sausage on a baking sheet for 20 minutes. Turn the sausage and bake it 5 to 10 minutes more, until it's fully cooked. Cool to room temperature.
  • Unfold the puff pastry on a lightly floured board. Cut each piece in half lengthwise and brush the top sides with mustard. Divide the sausage into 4 equal pieces. Starting at the long end of the pastry, place 1 piece of the sausage on top of the mustard and roll it up tightly, overlapping the end by 1/2 inch and sealing the pastry by brushing the edge with water. Cut off the excess pastry. Roll the other 3 pieces of sausage in puff pastry. Place the 4 rolls, seam side down, on a baking sheet lined with parchment paper. Brush with the egg wash. Lightly score each roll diagonally to make 7 equal pieces. Bake for 20 to 25 minutes, until browned. Slice and serve immediately with mustard.

Tips:

  • Choose high-quality puff pastry: Opt for all-butter puff pastry for a rich, flaky crust. Store-bought puff pastry works well, but you can also make your own if you have the time.
  • Use a variety of sausages: Experiment with different types of sausages, such as Italian sausage, breakfast sausage, or kielbasa. You can also use a combination of sausages for a more complex flavor.
  • Prepare the sausages properly: If the sausages are raw, cook them according to the package instructions before wrapping them in puff pastry. If the sausages are precooked, you can simply slice them and wrap them in puff pastry.
  • Use egg wash: Brush the puff pastry with egg wash before baking to give it a golden brown color and a crispy texture.
  • Bake until golden brown: Bake the sausage-wrapped puff pastries until the pastry is golden brown and the sausages are heated through. This usually takes about 20-25 minutes.

Conclusion:

Sausage-wrapped puff pastries are a delicious and easy-to-make appetizer or snack. With a variety of flavors and fillings to choose from, there's a sausage-wrapped puff pastry for everyone. Whether you're looking for a quick and easy weeknight meal or an impressive dish for a party, sausage-wrapped puff pastries are sure to please. So next time you're looking for a new and exciting way to enjoy sausage, give this recipe a try!
