Steps:
- Preheat the oven to 400 degrees F.
- Bring water, vinegar and brown sugar to a boil. Add the onions and remove from the heat. Cover, and set aside until the onions come to room temperature.
- Trim the crusts off the bread and cut the bread into thirds, for 3 rectangles per piece. Lightly brush both sides of the bread pieces with olive oil and lay out on a baking sheet. Toast in the oven until just crisp and lightly brown, about 5 minutes. Cool.
- To assemble: Quarter, core, and very thinly slice the apple, (a mandolin is terrific for this). Very thinly slice the cheese into triangles or shards that will fit nicely on the bread.
- Place a dab or smear of mustard on the bread. Place a piece of apple, cheese and 1 or 2 sprigs of watercress on each piece of toasted bread. Wrap a small piece of prosciutto around each stack to make a neat package. Top with a little bit of the pickled onions, a drizzle of olive oil and freshly cracked black pepper. Serve at room temperature.

- 1. Preheat over to 350 degrees.

- 3. In a separate bowl, mix the butter, onions, parmesan cheese and worchester. Set aside somewhere warm so butter does not solidify.

- 5. Pour butter mixture over the top of sandwiches cover with foil and bake until cheese is melted, about 20 minutes. Uncover and bake 5 more minutes to brown the buns a bit.
- 6. Recipe adapted from Food Network show 'Homemade in America with Sunny Anderson.'
Tips:
- For a crispier sandwich, use a panini press or a waffle iron instead of a skillet.
- To make the sandwiches ahead of time, assemble them and wrap them tightly in plastic wrap. Refrigerate for up to 24 hours. When you're ready to eat, preheat the skillet or panini press and cook the sandwiches until heated through.
- For a healthier sandwich, use whole-wheat bread and low-fat cheese. You can also add some vegetables, such as spinach, tomato, or avocado.
- You can also use different types of deli meat or cheese in this recipe. Some popular options include turkey, bacon, roast beef, cheddar, and mozzarella.
- If you want to make a vegetarian version of this sandwich, you can use tofu or tempeh instead of the ham.
Conclusion:
Sassy ham and cheese sandwiches are a quick and easy meal that can be enjoyed for breakfast, lunch, or dinner. They're perfect for busy weeknights or for packing in lunches. With a few simple ingredients, you can create a delicious and satisfying sandwich that everyone will love.
