**Sahlab: A Warm and Comforting Egyptian Beverage**
Sahlab is a traditional Egyptian beverage that is enjoyed during the winter months. It is made with a combination of milk, sugar, sahlab powder, and nuts. Sahlab powder is a starch that is extracted from the roots of orchids. It has a delicate nutty flavor and a slightly chewy texture. This unique beverage is often flavored with cinnamon, cardamom, or ginger. Sahlab can be served hot or cold, and it is a popular drink for breakfast, dessert, or as a snack. In this article, we will provide you with three different recipes for making sahlab: a classic recipe, a vegan recipe, and a chocolate recipe. Each recipe includes step-by-step instructions and a list of ingredients. Whether you are looking for a traditional Egyptian beverage or a delicious and comforting drink to warm you up on a cold day, sahlab is the perfect choice.
SAHLAB (MIDDLE EASTERN PUDDING)
This is a quick and easy to prepare dessert. I usually always have the ingredients on hand. There are boxed versions of this pudding, but it is traditionally prepared at home. You can add more or less cornstarch if preferred. This dessert is so versatile that it can be served warm or chilled. I love to eat it both ways, when it chills it firms up.

- Must stir constantly until it comes to a boil.
- Let boil for 2 minutes, meanwhile still stirring.
- Serve in dessert bowls.
- Top with cinnamon and coconut or just chopped pistachios.
- It's traditionally eaten hot, but I like it cold too, once it cooled off and firmed up.
- Enjoy!
EGYPTIAN SAHLAB OR SAHLEP
The website which I got this from says this is a popular winter beverage in Egypt. Usually it's made from the starchy bulbs of a plant called orchis mascula. For those who don't get original sahlep powder, this is a recipe with cornstarch as a substitute. Feel free to use the original thing, though :)

Tips:
- For a richer flavor, use full-fat milk instead of skim milk.
- If you don't have cornstarch, you can use arrowroot powder or tapioca flour instead.
- To make a vegan version of sahlab, use almond milk or soy milk instead of cow's milk.
- Garnish sahlab with ground cinnamon, chopped nuts, or shredded coconut before serving.
- You can also add a dollop of whipped cream or a scoop of ice cream to each serving.
Conclusion:
Sahlab is a delicious and comforting drink that is perfect for a cold winter day. It is easy to make and can be customized to your liking. Whether you like it hot or cold, with or without toppings, sahlab is a drink that everyone will enjoy.
