I love anything with apple and cinnamon and had to give this one a try. It's comfort food - great with vanilla ice cream or on its own. My kids love this as a snacking cake and it freezes well.

I often take this to pot lucks and it is a family favorite. This is great as a coffee cake or a dessert. I like to use a tart apple for this cake (Granny Smith or Northern spy's are best). For a richer cake you can use butter instead of shortening. This cake freezes well and is even better after the flavors mingle. You can leave...

This is one of my son's--who is very picky even at age 21!--favorite snacks. I use any kind of apple I happen to have but we prefer macintosh or haralson.

Number Of Ingredients 14

1 c butter, room temperature
1 c sugar
1/2 c brown sugar
2 eggs
2 1/2 c flour
1 tsp baking soda
1 tsp baking powder
1 tsp cinnamon
1/2 tsp salt
1 c chopped apples
1 c buttermilk
TOPPING
1/2 c sugar
1 tsp cinnamon

Steps:

  • 1. Grease 9 X 13 pan. Preheat oven to 325.
  • 2. Cream together butter and sugars. Add remaining ingredients. Sprinkle topping over batter. (Stick a toothpick or tester down into top in several places so it won't just form a crust and not bake through.)
  • 3. Bake 35-40 minutes.

Tips:

  • Choose the right apples: For this cake, it is recommended to use a balance of sweet and tart apples. Some good options include Granny Smith, Honeycrisp, and Braeburn. Feel free to mix and match varieties to create your own unique flavor combination.
  • Use fresh bread cubes: For the best texture, use fresh bread cubes rather than dried ones. This will help to keep the cake moist and flavorful.
  • Don't overmix the batter: Overmixing the batter can result in a tough cake. Mix just until the ingredients are combined.
  • Bake the cake until a toothpick inserted into the center comes out clean: This is the best way to ensure that the cake is cooked through without overbaking.
  • Let the cake cool completely before serving: This will allow the flavors to meld and the cake to set properly.

Roman apple cake is a delicious and easy-to-make dessert that is perfect for any occasion. With its simple ingredients and straightforward instructions, this cake is sure to become a favorite. Whether you are serving it for breakfast, brunch, or dessert, this cake is sure to please everyone. So next time you are looking for a sweet treat, give this Roman apple cake a try!
