Categories     World Cuisine Recipes     European     Italian

Time 3h15m

Yield 12

Number Of Ingredients 20

1 pound sweet Italian sausage
¾ pound lean ground beef
½ cup minced onion
2 cloves garlic, crushed
1 (28 ounce) can crushed tomatoes
2 (6 ounce) cans tomato paste
2 (6.5 ounce) cans canned tomato sauce
½ cup water
2 tablespoons white sugar
1 ½ teaspoons dried basil leaves
½ teaspoon fennel seeds
1 teaspoon Italian seasoning
1 ½ teaspoons salt, divided, or to taste
¼ teaspoon ground black pepper
4 tablespoons chopped fresh parsley
12 lasagna noodles
16 ounces ricotta cheese
1 egg
¾ pound mozzarella cheese, sliced
¾ cup grated Parmesan cheese

Steps:

  • In a Dutch oven, cook sausage, ground beef, onion, and garlic over medium heat until well browned. Stir in crushed tomatoes, tomato paste, tomato sauce, and water. Season with sugar, basil, fennel seeds, Italian seasoning, 1 teaspoon salt, pepper, and 2 tablespoons parsley. Simmer, covered, for about 1 1/2 hours, stirring occasionally.
  • Bring a large pot of lightly salted water to a boil. Cook lasagna noodles in boiling water for 8 to 10 minutes. Drain noodles, and rinse with cold water. In a mixing bowl, combine ricotta cheese with egg, remaining parsley, and 1/2 teaspoon salt.
  • Preheat oven to 375 degrees F (190 degrees C).
  • To assemble, spread 1 1/2 cups of meat sauce in the bottom of a 9x13-inch baking dish. Arrange 6 noodles lengthwise over meat sauce. Spread with one half of the ricotta cheese mixture. Top with a third of mozzarella cheese slices. Spoon 1 1/2 cups meat sauce over mozzarella, and sprinkle with 1/4 cup Parmesan cheese. Repeat layers, and top with remaining mozzarella and Parmesan cheese. Cover with foil: to prevent sticking, either spray foil with cooking spray, or make sure the foil does not touch the cheese.
  • Bake in preheated oven for 25 minutes. Remove foil, and bake an additional 25 minutes. Cool for 15 minutes before serving.

Time 1h35m

Yield 12

Number Of Ingredients 11

¼ cup butter
2 tablespoons all-purpose flour
salt and ground black pepper to taste
2 cups warm milk
2 pounds lean ground beef
2 (28 ounce) jars spaghetti sauce
1 pinch ground nutmeg, or to taste
1 (16 ounce) package no-boil lasagna noodles
1 (8 ounce) package shredded Mexican cheese blend
½ cup grated Parmesan cheese
½ cup water

Steps:

  • Melt butter in a small saucepan over medium-low heat. Stir flour, salt, and pepper into melted butter until flour is dissolved. Slowly whisk milk into butter-flour mixture until a thick white sauce forms, 2 to 4 minutes. Remove saucepan from heat.
  • Heat a large skillet over medium-high heat. Cook and stir beef in the hot skillet until browned and crumbly, 5 to 7 minutes; drain and discard grease. Add spaghetti sauce and nutmeg to ground beef; cook until spaghetti sauce is heated through, about 5 minutes.
  • Preheat oven to 350 degrees F (175 degrees C).
  • Spread a layer of meat sauce into the bottom of a 9x13-inch baking dish. Cover meat sauce layer with a layer of lasagna noodles; top with 1/3 the white sauce, 1/2 the remaining meat sauce, 1/3 the Mexican cheese blend, and 1/3 the Parmesan cheese, respectively. Repeat 1 more layer of each ingredient; top with 1 more layer lasagna noodles, remaining white sauce, Mexican cheese blend, and Parmesan cheese. Pour water around the edges of the dish. Cover dish with aluminum foil.
  • Bake in the preheated oven for 45 minutes. Remove aluminum foil and continue baking until cheeses are melted, about 10 more minutes. Let lasagna stand 10 minutes before serving.

Tips:

  • Use fresh ingredients: The fresher the ingredients, the better your lasagna will taste. This is especially true for the vegetables and herbs.
  • Don't overcook the noodles: Lasagna noodles should be cooked al dente, or slightly firm to the bite. If you overcook them, they will become mushy and the lasagna will fall apart.
  • Use a good quality tomato sauce: The tomato sauce is one of the most important components of lasagna. Make sure to use a sauce that is flavorful and has a good balance of acidity and sweetness.
  • Layer the lasagna properly: The order of the layers is important for the lasagna to cook evenly. Start with a layer of sauce, then add the noodles, then the cheese, and then the vegetables. Repeat this process until you have used up all of the ingredients.
  • Bake the lasagna at a high temperature: Lasagna should be baked at a high temperature (400 degrees Fahrenheit or 200 degrees Celsius) for the first 30 minutes. This will help to brown the top of the lasagna and create a crispy crust.
  • Let the lasagna rest before serving: Once the lasagna is baked, let it rest for at least 15 minutes before serving. This will allow the flavors to meld together and the lasagna to set.

Conclusion:

Lasagna is a delicious and versatile dish that can be enjoyed by people of all ages. With a little planning and effort, you can make a lasagna that is sure to impress your family and friends. So next time you're looking for a hearty and satisfying meal, give lasagna a try. You won't be disappointed!
