3 cloves garlic, minced
¾ teaspoon salt
1 cup heavy cream, divided

This is my husband's favorite dish, and he considers it a special occasion every time I make it. The creamy cheese sauce and the tender potatoes in this classic French dish combine to make a deliciously addictive experience. It's a great side dish with a roast pork loin or beef tenderloin. Add a green salad and French bread, and you have found the magic path to a man's heart. To avoid lumps in your sauce, add the milk just a little at a time as you stir the flour and butter. Experiment with different cheeses for variety.

Tips for Perfect Potatoes Au Gratin:

  • Choose the right potatoes: Use starchy potatoes like Russet or Yukon Gold, which hold their shape well and absorb the creamy sauce.
  • Slice the potatoes thinly and evenly: This ensures even cooking and helps the potatoes absorb the sauce better.
  • Don't overcrowd the baking dish: Arrange the potato slices in a single layer to ensure they cook evenly and get a golden-brown crust.
  • Use a flavorful cheese: Choose a cheese that melts well and has a strong flavor, such as Gruyère, Parmesan, or Cheddar.
  • Make sure the sauce is creamy and flavorful: Use a combination of milk, cream, and seasonings to create a rich and flavorful sauce that coats the potatoes.
  • Bake until golden brown and bubbly: Bake the potatoes au gratin until the top is golden brown and the sauce is bubbling around the edges.

Conclusion:

Potatoes au gratin is a classic French dish that is easy to make and always a crowd-pleaser. With its creamy, cheesy sauce and golden-brown crust, it's the perfect comfort food for any occasion. Whether you're serving it as a main course or a side dish, these tips will help you create a delicious and memorable dish that everyone will love.
