NO-BAKE CHOCOLATE RICE KRISPIE BARS

No-Bake Chocolate Rice Krispie Bars image

These chocolate Rice Krispies treats are crowd pleasers! The secret to making them soft and chewy is bringing the sugar mixture just to a boil and then cooking for only one minute. If it boils too long, they tend to be firmer and can become crumbly. -Dawn Lowenstein, Huntingdon Valley, Pennsylvania

Classic Crispy Rice Treats image

Gooey marshmallows and crispy rice cereal come together in this recipe for the all-original favorite. Time 45m

Yield Makes 24 cereal treats

Number Of Ingredients 7

Nonstick cooking spray
4 tablespoons unsalted butter
One 10-ounce bag mini marshmallows
6 cups crispy rice cereal, such as Rice Krispies
1 teaspoon pure vanilla extract
Pinch kosher salt
Decorative toppings, optional (see Cook's Note)

Steps:

  • Line a 9-by-13-inch baking dish with aluminum foil, leaving a 2-inch overhang on each of the longer sides. Spray the foil lightly with cooking spray.
  • Melt the butter in a large pot over medium heat. Add the marshmallows and cook, stirring occasionally, until melted and smooth, about 5 minutes. Remove from the heat and stir in the vanilla and salt.
  • Working quickly, add the rice cereal to the pot and stir with a rubber spatula until evenly coated. Transfer to the prepared baking dish and press into an even, compact layer. (Spray your hands with a little cooking spray to keep them from sticking when pressing the cereal mixture into the pan). Decorate with toppings if using (see Cook's Note).
  • Let sit at room temperature until firm, about 30 minutes. Cut into 24 squares. Store the cereal treats at room temperature in an airtight container for up to 3 days.

Tips:

  • Use fresh marshmallows for the best results. Old or stale marshmallows will not melt properly and will make the bars tough.
  • Do not overcook the marshmallows. Overcooked marshmallows will become hard and chewy.
  • If you do not have a microwave, you can melt the marshmallows in a saucepan over low heat. Stir constantly to prevent the marshmallows from burning.
  • Be careful when melting the chocolate chips. If the chocolate is overheated, it will become grainy and difficult to work with.
  • Let the bars cool completely before cutting them. This will help to prevent them from falling apart.

Conclusion:

Rice Krispies Chocolate Dream Bars are a delicious and easy-to-make treat that is perfect for any occasion. With just a few simple ingredients, you can create a dessert that everyone will love. These bars are also a great way to use up leftover Rice Krispies cereal.

Here are some additional tips for making Rice Krispies Chocolate Dream Bars:

  • For a fun variation, try adding different mix-ins to the bars, such as chopped nuts, dried fruit, or mini marshmallows.
  • If you are short on time, you can make these bars in a 9x13 inch baking pan instead of a 8x8 inch pan. Just be sure to adjust the baking time accordingly.
  • Rice Krispies Chocolate Dream Bars can be stored in an airtight container at room temperature for up to 3 days.
